This is sort of ma cross board thread, split between Acessories and Netwokring, but anyway:
I have had 3 external HD enclosures go out on me, all with the same problem of not mounting. The HDD I have is a Seagate 1TB 7200.11 and have never had any problems with it, just the enclosures. I have had 2 Ministack V2.5 and one OWC Mercury Elite AL-Pro Dual Bay. The Ext HDD houses all of my music, movies etc. My inquiry is this: Shell out some more money for another dual bay enclose? That looks like a pretty good one(any other suggestions welcome). OR I have had this old G4 DP MDD witha dead PSU and am thinking for about $99 I could get it up an running and throw the 1TB in there and use it as a wireless server. Question: Suggestions between either or? ANy trouble streaming moves and music from the server to my mini via wireless N? _________________ Mac Mini C2D 1.83Ghz 4GBs RAM

I'm not a fan of either option.
If you get the PSU for the G4 you will also need to get a PCI SATA card.
If you get the dual drive enclosure, well I'm not a fan of USB for large storage since it doesn't feature DMA like features. What that means is that the CPU has to monitor all the transactions the drives make. I would recommend a FireWire external. ICYDOCK makes a dual drive FW/USB2 enclosure that you might want to look for.

Everything can and will fail (it is just a matter of when).
I have a cheap PC box with FreeNAS on it. Works great. My only problem is that I live in a Studio Apartment (very small), and the PCs PSU is very loud. I am planning on moving the whole thing into an Atom-Based PC, with a fan-less PS. The problem with this is that most Atom-Based Motherboards will only support 2 Sata drives, so there is no expansion beyond that. |

Thanks for all the responses. I've decided to go for the Icydock. Just an FYI though Smithcraft I already had a PCI SATA card installed into the g4 so that wouldn't be a problem. _________________ Mac Mini C2D 1.83Ghz 4GBs RAM
