|
|
I picked up a 2006 intel core 2 duo MacBook for practically nothing. Guy claimed, woman that had, just took out hard drive. So I put in a 320 gb Sata hard drive and I get nothing. Put in a leopard disc and it sounds like it,s spinning. Hard drive is also. But I get a black screen. Oh yea and now it won't eject the disc. A friend of mine gave me the hard drive. It already had leopard on it. And he tested it and his machine did mount and boot to the hard drive and ran fine. So I'm thinking LCD inverter board or logic board, which would both be a major fix. I tried safe mode, pram, etc...Any tricks that you guys can suggest, that I may have over looked? _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Yes it does. You read my mind. I just did not want to spend 30 bucks to find out if it was the screen or not. I was being cheap. But I already invested in the ac adapter and hard drive. I did the same thing with an iMac G4 and all of a sudden after 20 minutes, both screens came on. Wonder if I'd be that lucky this time. Unfortunately the adapter that I purchased for the G4 is quite different and won't work with this MacBook. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Did you try an SMC (System Management Controller) reset? You can get a mini-Displayport adapter or cable from Monoprice.com for less than Apple's $30. _________________ 17" iMac/G4 1GHz/768MB RAM/80GB HD/Super Drive/OS X 10.4.11

I got the cable. Black on both screens. So I guess that means it's not the screen. Have not tried smc reset. Will try that now. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Ok. I tried the smc reset. Still nothing. What worries me is the eject key does not work and the numbers lock F6 key does not even light. It sound like the DVD is spinning when I first turn it in, and I think I can hear the hard drive. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

One more thing. Screen flashes once quickly when I press the power button. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

I took it apart today, looking for a loose wire or something that was not hooked up. I found nothing. There were 2 missing screws, which means someone else took it apart before me. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Anyone else, got anything? It's probably the Logic Board. But I'm still fishing with some hope. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Random thoughts... Does it make the startup chime? Have you looked at the repair guides over a iFixit.com to see if everything is there, connected properly, etc.? I read something recently, I think it was in a newsletter from Small Dog Electronics about a Mac (I don't remember which kind) that wouldn't boot from hard drive or optical drive and I think it turned out to be a bad hard drive cable. Hope something here helps... _________________ 17" iMac/G4 1GHz/768MB RAM/80GB HD/Super Drive/OS X 10.4.11

No start up chime. Looked inside. It looks all good. But what do I know? I can't see any loose wires or connections. It looks clean inside. Dew guy, thanks for the help. Question: why would the keyboard not have lights? No shift key light, no numbers lock light and eject key not ejecting key. But the power button on the same top panel works fine. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

I wish I had more to tell you but I really don't know anything more. My real world experience with "fixing" computers is upgrading RAM. The only other thing I can think of would be to try disconnecting one thing at a time (like hard drive cable, etc.) and see if it will make any difference. Good Luck.
Edit: I just remembered one more thing, maybe this article will give you a better idea of what is or isn't going on when you press the power button:

Here is Apple's suggested procedure:

Thank you guys. I read both those pages before I even made this Post. I have been Googling this for a week. I talked to the guy at the Apple Authorized Service Center. This guy replaced the Logic Board in my iMac. So I trust his opinion. He said, if I had given it to him, he would have went through all the same Troubleshooting measures that I had already gone through. He did say, when I tried to boot without any ram, it should have made beeping sounds. Not hearing those sounds, he thinks it's most likely the Logic Board. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

I remembered two more things, but I don't know how helpful they will be.
Take a look at the Repair of the Week in this Small Dog Electronics' Tech Tails newsletter. I realize it's for an iMac, but there's a similar symptom (screen flash).
If you're so inclined you could probably find a service manual here.
