Apple's sneak preview page can be seen here -

http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/

Color me not impressed. Mission Control looks good, like a suped up version of Expose. But every thing else looks like stuff Apple did some time ago, and dropped. Then again, with the iDevices being super popular, the newer user interface in Lion might just be what the masses have ordered.

I wonder if there will still be a Finder like desktop, or if you will have to use the Launchpad feature?

I wonder if the App store will be like Apples download pages, and just as disorganized?

Looks like I might be getting a mini, before Lion is the required OS.

Steve Jobs did say it was just a "sneak peek" and that he wished he had another hour and a half to show off more of Lion. Considering that Lion won't be released until the middle of next year, it's more likely that they didn't have anything that was finished/stable enough to show the public. This wasn't a developers conference, so some of the more technical details wouldn't have been discussed. They did the same thing with Leopard. The early betas that Apple showed off looked a lot like Tiger. We'll probably have to wait until the next WWDC to get a good look at what Lion will really offer.

The main takeaway I have from this is that they're going to try to make the Mac as friendly to iOS users as possible. Many of the iOS users know nothing about the Mac, so they want to make them comfortable. There are a lot of people who wouldn't consider a Mac if it weren't for their exposure to the iOS.

The Mac App Store is probably a must for this crowd. A lot of people have difficulty grasping how to use DMG files and other installers. Obviously, this isn't an actual feature of Lion, since Snow Leopard will have it soon.

Launchpad and Full-screen apps are things that iOS users will be familiar with. I'm not sure how many veteran Mac users will use Launchpad. Full-screen apps finally gives the "green button" a function, rather than some odd behavior that varies from app to app.

Mission Control is interesting in how it combines the elements we have used separately. I'm not sure I want Spaces, Expose and Dashboard all cluttered together like that, but I don't think we've really seen enough of this feature to pass any sort of judgement on its usability.

So, I think we'll just have to keep waiting to find out what Lion will do for us. I would have liked for them to have shown more, but I'd be surprised if Lion is currently more than an early beta, at this stage.

As much as I am not impressed with what was presented to us yesterday, I agree completely with what Colstan says. This was just a tiny teaser probably meant to entice people who have never used OSX.

I'm fairly certain it will go back up to the full price. SL is an upgrade, and that's why it's $29.

I'm not a buyer of apps on the current "app" store, and I can't see buying anything from the "new" app store. I haven't ever used Spaces or Expose. Frankly i'm not sure I want or have a need for iOS with my Mac's. iOS is for my portables, not my desktop Confused .

I use Exposé and Spaces all the time. I set up active corners in three corners. One for Spaces; one for Exposé, and one for the desktop. Having all of them together in one place would be OK but I like just moving my cursor to a corner with a quick action to get what I want. Moving the cursor to an icon takes a bit more time and attention.

Lion was about apps. It would have been good if there were mention of OS features. Even though I don't really know about programming I could always come here for an explanation from experts.

I like the iMovie features. I do think building a movie trailer could get old after a while. It did look fun.

In the iPhoto demo there was always someone taking the photos that was never in the photographs. The same went for the movie trailer demo. Phil (the marketing guy) did a demo of his trip but he wasn't in any of the photos. The same thing happens when Steve Jobs does demos. They probably need professional photographers to make all of that look so good.

Are there any companies out there capable of creating an OS? I've been wishing that there were someone else out there capable of making an OS good enough for manufacturers to install. Microsoft started out small and became big. So did Apple. I know that there are versions of Linux out there getting better all the time. Could Sony or Toshiba ever take the leap to create an OS that was good? Is there some group of dedicated engineers out there creating a super fast OS framework to run on some unknown hardware? What OS are the quantum computer experimenters using? Perhaps it will be one of those guys that becomes the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.
