PC Magazine Reviews New Mac mini

PC Magazine has posted a review of the new Mac mini. Joel Santo Domingo writes, "The Apple Mac mini has been an entry-level mainstay for the Apple faithful ever since its introduction in 2005. The exterior of the Mac mini (Nvidia GeForce 9400M) is the same 2 by 6.5 by 6.5 inches (HWD) that's been a mini hallmark for its entire existence. As usual, the interior has changed, this time significantly. These improvements, while keeping at the same price point, make it a compelling choice for the Windows-to-Mac switcher, as well as the mini fan." PC Magazine rated the Mac mini as being "good" with a score of 3.5 out of 5 stars.

| Ugh! Comparing PC to Macs is like comparing McD cheese burgers to a Philly Cheese Steak. You can go damn near anywhere to pick up a McD but your really have to find a place that builds a great cheese steak. |

I think you can compare some of the hardware now. It's the software where they lose me. I do like Windows 7 though.  |

Too many mac fan boys.... Computer? check. Similar hardware(mac vs pc)? check. An OS that allows an average user to email, web, music, movies, etc? check.
Hmm seems like they very are similar. Using your analogy a burger to a burger.
The OS you say? They both do they same thing even though they are built differently. |

I think the new Mac minis are awesome. I can't even think of a computer in the same price range that I would want more. Good lord, it has just about everything you need. Show me a Dell with FW800, support for dual displays, 801.11n, BT and digital audio in the same price range. The Mac mini really only lacks in the hard drive area, which can easily be upgraded. It's also small and quite as hell. Plus, it runs the best OS out there. I'm sold! Now, does anyone want to buy an old Mac mini? I want one now!  |

I think the review was quite fair except for the 3.5/5 rating. I think 4/5 would have been more appropriate, given the written description. Perhaps it was the anemic 1gb RAM/120gb drive that took it down a bit. Those are lower specs than even the bottom of line PC's.

Yeah, I forgot about the standard RAM. It's lacking in that department as well. It probably would have been smart for Apple to put 2GB in both models. Then put the 2.26GHz C2D in the $799 model. Make that the difference. To be honest, I don't know who in their right mind would buy the $799 model. A putty knife isn't that hard to use.  |

It was funny when I bought my 799 mini three weeks ago I was in a quandry about the purchase over the base. Now that they dropped the price to 529 I feel much better about it.
I do feel the new 799 mini needs something in the oomph department to justify the price. I think it should have come with the 2.26 and 4 gigs with say a 160 gig hd and that would have made people cheer. |

I decided to order the $599 model tonight. It will be my third Mac mini. I'm not sure if this one will be use for HTPC or on the desktop, but I can't wait to get it.

seems to me that the 600 dollar model with the 2.26ghz upgrade is the way to go. cost is 750 without any deals and deals are out there. then add ram and a hdd.

...ya, they want about $150 for the RAM upgrade, it's much less through OWC or Newegg.com. |

I purchased my RAM at DataMen. I have seen lots of good reviews of DataMen, OWC, and even Crucial. I would first find the exact/best memory for your Mac and then price all 3 places and go with the cheapest (with comparable warranties). Quality does matter with Mac memory, so it is usually best to go with a name brand. It's always a pain to trade back and forth between companies to track down what you are looking for.
