|
|
Back in 2009, the MiniStack was a great addition to a Mac Mini.
Unfortunately, Apple changed the Mac Mini dimensions with the 2010 model.
AFAIK, no external enclosure with a compatible footprint has been announced yet.
Does anybody have advanced information on a coming enclosure with compatible dimensions ? |

edit to be frank every stackable for the old minis was mediocre as work goes. they looked good. right now no one has put a new one up. the new mini slides on its black plastic bottom. I would consider using the gear below with something glued to the black bottom to stop sliding
consider this it is highend and would look very nice under the new mini

a second option would be two of these
newegg
two of these would be 160 and two hdds like these
newegg wd
would be 220 total of 380 for 3gb _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

The problem is that none of those external disks is esthetically compatible with the Mac Mini 2010.
The only solutions seems to be buying a Time Capsule (same footprint as the Mac Mini 2010), open it, and use the USB output to connect the internal HD, instead of using it as a networked Time Capsule.
Wonder if anybody already did that... |

my point was pretty will get you poor performance.
Also the 2010 slides on its black bottom it is not designed to do what you want. there won't be what you want without a tray or shelf to prevent the mini from sliding.
usb 2 connection is like walking uphill for speed. you are better off doing nothing. time capsules over heat and burn out quite a bit. good luck in what you do.
here is a link you could but this and stack a black case on it.

Well, here is an external drive enclosure fully compatible with the Mac Mini 2010 footprint : the Stardom Safe Capsule SC2-B2.
Only problem is now the height, twice what I need since it is designed to accommodate 2 x SATAII 3.5" disks.
It is USB2, and can be used with independent single disks instead of RAID1. Sold by Newegg.com for $70.
There may be an other caveat, since it is not clear if the "independent" non-RAID1 mode can be used with only a single disk inside.
Edit : Stardom confirmed that in "independent" mode, you can populate the enclosure with only 1 SATAII 3.5" disk.

it is like the pretty girlfriend nice looking but she won't do that thing you like.
in this case she is usb2 based translation she is soooo slow.
http://www.stardom.com.tw/stardom_products_data/safe_capsule/sc2_manual_en_fr_ge_sp_cth_ja_ko.pdf
go to page 3 it can be 2 drives for double the storage and not mirror.
this would be nice with fw800. also it is white plastic so while it may be 192 by 192mm it does not look right . also the new mini will slide off this unit without velcro or a small piece of double sided tape. myself I would stack it on the 9 inch by 9 inch glyph and get really good performance . _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

When directly USB2-connected to a Mac, the Stardom appears to be only 20% slower than the same drive through FW800, which is about one would expect : see BareFeats Stardom benchmark. |

you are misinterpreting his scores. he is doing a 9 gb copy with indexing and 9 min for fw 800 with 11 min for usb 2
take the index out and it is 3 min vs 5 min.
also 9gb files are small for itunes libraries . fw800 will be twice the speed of that unit. testing for 9gb is not much a 90 gb would be 30 mins vs 50 mins and in practical real life more like 24 mins vs 50 mins. it just depends on your needs usb is okay, but has a lot of limits compared to fw800. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Sadly, inXtron Inc., the Taiwanese OEM makers of the Newer Technology miniStack V3, replied to my query : "We don't have any plan to make M9 in same footprint as Apple Time Capsule.".
Guess the only 2010 Mac Mini compatible enclosure remains thus the USB2 Stardom Safe Capsule... |

The early Iomega Minimax had some bad reviews, these new ones have FW800 on them and I think the same footprint you can get them in 1TB or 2TB models. Cheapest I found for the 1TB was $129

the new 2010 mini is 7.7 inches by 7.7 inches the minimax is 6.5 by 6.5 inches.. The fact of the matter is right now you can't get anything that is worthwhile to stack under the new mini.
This is one of many reasons why I choose to hold onto my 2009 2.66ghz mini.
even though the unit below is a little bigger footprint it is a far better piece of gear and would be a fairly good match for pretty.

the white plastic stardom safe capsule usb2 is not a good piece of gear for a lot of reasons. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Only problem is now the height. | Sadly the only problem is not height.
I read on another forum that the radius of the SafeCapsule's corners are
different than the '10 Alumini. What I did was to draw an outline of my
SafeCapsule on a piece of paper and go to the Apple Store in the nearest
Mall. I then compared the radius of the SafeCapsule with new mini and the
Radii do not match. If you plan on stacking the SafeCapsule and the mini
it'll look weird. You could probably get away with side-by-side but not stacked.
