hi I am using 3 external HDD enclosures 2 have an esata connection in addition to firewire 800 and 400.
The third one a WD have 2 firewire 400 and an esata connection.
Can I daisy chain the WD external HD with one of the other enclosure using the eSata cable instead of the firewire 400?
I might sound stupid but I am affraid to do some damage if I do so.
Thanks for oyur answers.

this may work for you. I never used it.

I own the device below it works great, but it is not going to work with esata. the device below will work with 7 fw800 devices. really stable and far better then daisy chaining

The short answer is no. If you do Philips eSATA hack
the Firewire and USB ports won't be active. I think
you should Daisy Chain your FW ports or spring for that
Firewire hub. If you Daisy Chain via FW place your
FW800 enclosures upstream or closer to the source
and your FW400 downstream or on the end of your
chain. That way your FW400 won't slow down your
FW800. That FW hub is more convenient and is an
excellent solution but not inexpensive, Daisy Chaining
is free.

daisy chain of the third hdd with the fw400 last may have a lot of dropouts. I find that 2 on a chain works okay 3 or more on a daisy is very much a case of do you feel lucky.

I have three HD's Daisy Chained all of the time.
I've had as many as five. Never a problem.
I do use high quality after market Firewire
cables. That might be the difference.
Try the free way first and if it doesn't
work go the HUB route.

Ok, Ok, Ok, Philip's right, as usual!

I just ordered the Verge Labs Nitro AV 8-port Firewire Hub.

As I mentioned, I have several FW Hard Drive enclosures
Daisy Chained. Well I needed to take one off line to let
it rest (DON"T ASK) a while and ended up having to
take two more off line with it. Its not a deal breaker
but just annoying as well as inconvenient.

So, I'm modifying my advice. If your poor like me
then Daisy Chain and If your wealthy like Philip
get the HUB and if your tired of being annoyed or
don't want to be inconvenienced then take Philips
advice and GET THE HUB!!!!!!!!!

A power supply is included and it
should be at the price they sell it for.
