Apple Premieres New Apple TV
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Posted by: Glenn
Apple today announced the new Apple TV which offers the simplest way to watch your favorite HD movies and TV shows on your HD TV for $99. Apple TV users can choose from the largest online selection of HD movies to rent, including first run movies for just $4.99, and the largest online selection of HD TV show episodes to rent from ABC, ABC Family, Fox, Disney Channel and BBC America for 99 cents.
Apple TV also streams content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe, as well as music, photos and videos from PCs and Macs to your HD TV. Enjoy gorgeous slideshows of your photos on your HD TV using Apple TV’s selection of built-in slideshows. Apple TV has built-in HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and an internal power supply for easy set-up, and features silent, cool, very low power operation in an enclosure that's less than four inches square—80 percent smaller than the previous generation.
"The new Apple TV, paired with the largest selection of online HD movie and TV show rentals, lets users watch Hollywood content on their HD TV whenever they want," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "This tiny, silent box costing just $99 lets users watch thousands of HD movies and TV shows, and makes all of their music, photos and videos effortlessly available on their home entertainment system."

TRY AS HE MAY
5 bucks a pop for a movie vs 1 dollar from redbox Steve will not get as much as he wants in terms of movies sales.
Any family on a tight dollar may want the apple tv to replace the cable bill but 5 dollars a movie is why blockbuster went bust, not the on demand concept the money concept hurt BB.
I can see people that don't watch a lot of cable using this to replace cable tv 2 shows a week runs you about 8 or 9 dollars a month.
5 dollars for a apple tv movie vs 1 dollar for a red box movie.
come on steve you could do better.
just think everyone is pushing the portability of apple. tiny this ,little this, carry it anywhere concept. so if you are on the go in the usa red box will be in your path as you listen to the little nano you will rent the movie from red box . Then use the 4 dollar difference to buy chips candy soda at the supermarket where the red box is.. by the way the new nano looks good. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Keep in mind that the AppleTV isn't limited to the USA. AFAIK there's no such thing as RedBox in Canada, at least not where I live.
Also, in the middle of winter, getting out to remove snow from your driveway and your car, pre-heating the car, going to the DVD rental place, removing snow from the car again if it's snowing, getting back to your home, perhaps removing snow from the driveway again... just to see a movie?
And you still need to return that DVD a few days later, if not the day after to avoid late fees. In some cases, that 4$ extra will be more than worth it.
Then again, I only check those "movies of the week" offers. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

When he announced the price, nobody clapped or even made a sound. Steve didn't even look too thrilled about it. Don't lay this all on Apple guys. As he carried on and announced the $.99 tv programs, people liked that, but the networks didn't. I'm sure it was the same thing with the movie producers. There is no way they would want to let their movies go for less than $5 a pop. Maybe with time. |

I just noticed on the Apple TV page they state that HD rentals start at $3.99. I wonder which is the correct price? _________________ Young Buck 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 duo (late 2009), Enhanced USB Monica.

He said that brand new movies were at 4.99$USD, so if it starts at 3.99$USD I'm guessing it's for older or less popular movies. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

I got the impression the $4.99 was just the initial release price, which will be at the time the film is released for sale. I assume older films will be cheaper.
Even at $0.99 to rent a season of your favourite TV series such as 24 would set you back more than it would cost to buy the box set on DVD.
I really don't see rental as an option that appeals to me. People want to own their media and watch it as much as they like. I'd hate to have my kids growing up now if AppleTV was the only option, it would cost me a fortune renting the same movie over and over again.
I don't see streaming movies as an option either I already have caps in place which stop me download during peak periods, unfortunately those are the periods when I would want to watch some TV or a Film. As we start to stream more and more, I don't see the ISPs sitting there happily providing the back bone for all this data transfer. They are going to be quick to switch our payments to metered services just as they have recently done with the iPhone. The cost of that movie rental just got very expensive. _________________ Phil

Heaps of options: http://www.svideo.com/hdmiconverter.html
I am really undecided on this one. I was looking forward to this because my Mum's ATV just stopped working last week and I told her to hold off till today, but now I am thinking I should have told to go get one of the old ones while she could....
In australia, and especially where the old girl is, internet is not easy. She has to get internet over satellite government subsidised, for about $80p/mth and that gets her 500MB of download quota.
Internet streaming is just not going to be an option for some people, so what does she get now? A Mini? Waaaaay over her head...
hmmmmm.....

Thanks but Whoa they are more than the apple tv.
Wouldn't I need to go hdmi to component or s video? Instead of reversing the title. Analog is analog no changing that I don't think unless it's converted. On the other hand component can handle both doesn't make much sense. I was hoping to find some cheap cable, but I don't think they exist. I'm out I guess can't get a new TV its not even about the TV it's more about finding a TV stand I like that isn't crazy expensive. |

There is no hard drive in this model.
You are supposed to be able to play off of your Mac's hard drive. |

The content producers have been busy trying to shut redbox down. Do you really think that they want that pricing to become the norm? There is no way they would allow Apple to price it at that ( and it's not a $1 for recent HD).
It seems to always be the case that someone looks around and finds some obscure example to claim that a product is not right. Of course the ATV is not perfect. Neither is a vending machine.
The unfortunate thing is that it would appear that very little exciting can happen in the media world ( music, video, publishing) given the mindset of those who control content. Since it appears to be impossible to go around them I just don't see how we can hope to see neat ereaders, media players, etc...
I really like my ATV and will probably get the new one, but it's not with a great deal of excitement. The best part I feel about the new ATV is Airplay. If it isn't saddled by too many restrictions that alone would justify the unit.
