Can anyone recommend database software similar to Microsoft Access?

I am currently using Bento at home and Access at work. Bento is a good piece of software and I enjoy using it. It is coming up short in a couple of areas that, with some simple work, Access does what I need it to do.

I am not looking for a replacement for Bento. I am looking for something that I can use to supplement Bento in a couple of tasks that I am working on.

Any assistance/recommendations would be appreciated.

Well, the obvious candidate would be "Base" (part of the OpenOffice suite) since OO directly copies a lot of the functionality of MS Office: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org_Base

There's a Mac-only fork of the OpenOffice development effort called "NeoOffice": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeoOffice

If you have a budget to spend, you could investigate Bento's "big brother", FileMaker Pro: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileMaker_Pro

Thanks for the reply. It's been a long time since I've looked at OpenOffice and NeoOffice. I forgot they had a database application. I may have to give it a try. I've been looking at Filemaker Pro but I don't know if I need it bad enough to spend that kind of money.

I've downloaded OpenOffice and the 30-day trial of Filemaker Pro.

Filemaker Pro looks good and I like it. I just don't need to spend $300 on it for what I want to do.

OpenOffice.org looks like it will fit the bill. I did find the way you have to go to get data into it from a spread sheet a bit clunky. While it is annoying it gets the job done. I'm also not going to complain about much more than that I have because it still works and does a decent job considering the price.

Actually, considering the price, I'd have to say that OpenOffice.org is pretty darned impressive.

That's good news decaturnc, I'm glad to hear that you were able to make one of those apps fit the bill! Smile
