Hi
I have a Mac mini (mid 2007) C2D 2.0 GHz. A few weeks ago, we bought a new PC for my wife (she's too stubborn to become a Mac person). This PC is a real monster. The processor is an Intel i7-830, it has 8Gb of RAM and a few other features and it's running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I find it very peculiar that when we transfer TV shows we have recorded her on her PC and me on my Mac, it takes forever to complete the transfer. For example, a 2.5Gb file takes somewhere around 40 minutes from the PC to the Mac or vice-versa.
Our router is an Airport Extreme Base Station. Clue anyone ? _________________ iMac 2010, 21.5", 8Gb of RAM

Are you transferring the files over the wireless network ?
Its sounds like you have a very slow wireless connection between the two systems. _________________ Phil

can you put all three pieces in the same room a foot apart.
pc /mac /airport
if it does it fast your problem may be fixed by an extra antenna. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Nope. I can't put them in the same room. For one thing my cable modem is located in the basement and so is my Airport Extreme. The Mac and the PC are also in two separate rooms on the first floor. _________________ iMac 2010, 21.5", 8Gb of RAM

I should be clear just for one download. your cost is zero to test. I don't know if you need antenna boosters. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

I don't want to say go out and buy a couple of usb dongles for external antennas without being sure distance from the airport is your problem. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Can you move the airport extreme up to the ground floor and run an ethernet cable back to the cable modem in the basement.
Could you run an ethernet cable between the two computers ? _________________ Phil

Are both computers connecting using the N setting?
Are there any other devices using the network?
Might try changing the Radio Mode on your AirPort Extreme, if you are using N/B/G compatible mode try going to N only 2.4GHz and then try N only 5 GHz, or another combination to see which gives you the best through put. You'll find those settings under the Wireless tab on your Extreme.
Also, check your Network Utility and see what Link Speed you are getting, on an N setting you should be at least 130 Mbit/s _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

Thanks for your answers.
Both the PC and the Mac mini are connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Moving either one represents a problem. Moving the Airport Base Station is not really practical, either.
One thing I could try is to connect both machines via an Ethernet cable and see what happens. I'll try that tomorrow.
thanks again _________________ iMac 2010, 21.5", 8Gb of RAM

If the PC and the Mini are both connected via ethernet cables to the Airport Extreme then you don't need the wifi signal. Try turning off the wifi on both the Mini and the PC to force the connection to use the wired connection. I find on my system the wireless seems to take priority and slows down my transfers so I leave the wifi off which then lets me run at gigabit speeds between the Macs. _________________ Phil

The PC doesn't have a wi-fi card and the wi-fi on the mini has never been activated. I have tried connecting the PC and the Mac mini with an Ethernet cable and the transfers are just about as long. _________________ iMac 2010, 21.5", 8Gb of RAM

What connection speed from the Mac to the Router and the Win to the Router are you showing? Are you connected at 100Mbps?
Do you have any other machine you can use for some testing?
You're running quality Cat5 cables, not anything like a Powerline setup right?
Are you running the Windows or another Firewall, what about Anti-Virus? Might try disabling one at a time to see if that improves the transfer. _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

I don't know how to check the connection speed between Windows and the router or between the mini and the router.
I have a notebook using Windows 7 with the same "speed".
I do have quality Ethernet cables.
I use the firewall that is included with Windows, I'll try disabling it. No anti-virus software since we practically never access the Net with my wife's PC. _________________ iMac 2010, 21.5", 8Gb of RAM

On your Mac, open up Applications, Utilities, then launch Network Utility. You should see your "link speed" listed on the left side, should read 100 Mbit/s.
On Win 7 I can't help much, I use XP. If you can get to the Network window try right clicking on the Enternet connection icon and bring up the Status window (might work if the network icon shows in the menu bar on the lower right) and it should read Speed: 100.0 Mbps.
While in Network Utility on the Mac use the Ping tab and ping the network address assigned to the Windows 7 machine. The numbers at the bottom might show us something. I just pinged my Windows XP machine with the Mini I'm setting up and came back with 0.632/0.907/1.633/0.354 ms (which is min/avg/max/stddev) _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

What are you using to transfer the files? File Sharing, Instant Messenger, FTP? _________________ wants a quad core mini |
