Apple Announces International iPad Availability for May 28th

Apple today announced that the iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on Friday, May 28th. Customers can pre-order all iPad models from Apple's online store in all nine countries beginning on Monday, May 10th. You can see all of the pricing listed down below. The company also said they plan to release the iPad in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July. Availability, local pricing and pre-order plans for these nine additional countries will be announced at a later date.

Why does Apple always bump the price up for the UK. A quick glance at the exchange rates puts the 64gig+3G model at a whopping $990.
I was excited about this product, sadly no more. |

They are the prices I'd expected as I'd already included in my budget the usual Apple UK Customers are mugs top up price and they didn't disappoint. Pre Tax prices for the US and UK models shows were paying an extra $50-60 dollars over the US prices even allowing for the dodgy exchange rate.
I would also have preferred the week before as it's my birthday, but I guess I'll have to have a late birthday this year. I've just got to convince the family to buy it me as a present now. 
Depending on the 3G data plans, and the launch date of the 3G model also being the 28th May then I think I'll be going for the 32GB 3G model. If the 3G is delayed then I think it will be a 32GB wifi model and a Mifi.

Remember that prices in both the USA and Canada are before taxes.
So for Canada, if we take the 64GB WiFi+3G model at $879CAD and add the sales tax of 12.875% for Quebec, we end up at 992$CAD with the current exchange rate telling me that 992 Canadian dollars = 951 U.S. dollars.
The prices for Canada and the UK are from 829$USD, but there's not much we can do. I just wanted to show you that it's not a UK-specific situation. There's only a 40$USD difference for the top iPad model between the Canadian and the UK, for the low-end model the difference is probably much less.

UK prices include our tax (VAT Value Added Tax) so in my calc's I removed the 17.5% VAT and compared the pretax prices.
Apple have said they charge the prices the market will stand, so markets outside of the US are treated as cash cows by Apple. We get the products late and then always have to pay extra.
I think this is unrelated to the pricing though but Apple really are starting to get a very bad name in the UK. Weirdly Microsoft are sort of becoming the underdog and people are starting to like them again. Apple are now the new big bad corporate enemy.

And other countries in Europe are left out, what about the Benelux?, Scandinavia? Many loyal Apple adepts there. I'm beginning to like Linux more and more...

I am getting the idea that apple is doing a bit too well. A new macbook came out today for 999 the specs are that of a lower grade laptop. Apple is just getting very expensive.
