just got an update window saying that iStat Menus is now a paid app and if I want ver. 3.0...I gotta pay.

Sad I hate being a poor student otherwise I'd pony up. I'll have to play with 2.0 as long as it'll let me.

I've been very pleased with iStat Menus, though. It rocks.

It is very cool. I use it to monitor my Verizon DSL and Safari's rather strange issues with Flash video (they don't know when to stop streaming). I don't really see a benefit to upgrading for pay though.

The damned thing pops up a window wanting me to upgrade every time I start my Mac. So if you don't upgrade, you basically get hit with this warning, forcing you to pay. Nice.

hmmm. I haven't rebooted. I selected "skip this version" when it gave me the option to upgrade. If I'm still getting pop ups when I reboot I'll boycott this company, even their freeware.

That's too bad about iStat. I haven't tried it yet. I have been using menu meters for quite a while (Free)

I got an email back from them about a fix:

"We are very sorry about the problem. Its caused by a bug in the update checker in version 2.
We are looking at releasing a patch but until we do you can fix it by removing the update checker which is located at - /Library/Application Support/iStat local/iStat menus Updater.app"

Kudos to the Bjango Support Team

When MainMenu when paid I was pretty ticked, mostly because they sold out to another company and wanted $20... even though all they had done was buy it. Howeer, iStat has evolved and the owner didn't try price gouging me when he started charging. So for $10 I'll register it, for now 2.0 is still doing what I need. They did add the ability to control the fan so that would eliminate the need for running SMC Fan control too.

I've bought 3.0. I don't notice any improvements or worthwhile changes. Its been a good app for me for (probably) 3 years now, so $10.00 is not much to pay. But if you don't want to pay right now, I don't think you are missing out on anything - unless as the author says, $10.00 is only for early May, and the price will go up later.

Ah!

System Preferences > iStat menus > General > 'Update Checker' uncheck 'Check for updates every 24 hours' & 'Check for updates on startup'

Perfect! Thanks
