Steve Jobs does have a justification for the lack of processor power in the new 13" MBP.
| Quote: | | We chose killer graphics plus 10 hour battery life over a very small CPU speed increase. Users will see far more performance boost from the speedy graphics. |
Here's the article:
http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/13/steve-jobs-on-13-inch-macbook-pros-use-of-intel-core-2-duo-processors/
I for one, got my 13" MB Pro about 4 months ago, and don't see a need to upgrade to this "new" 13" version; so that means my laptop won't be going on Ebay. Since the iPad (whenever I get it - should've ordered the WiFi version) will now be my "portable computer" I would've been ok sacrificing battery life for a Core i7 and improved graphics. |

The wattage might be an issue in the 13" Macbook, same for the Mac Mini as far as putting an i5 or i7 in that package. The Integrated HD Graphics is built-in to the i5 and i7 processors. Still no word on how it compares to the external GPU's. I guess Apple can't get the i5 or i7 without it so you get two video processors. _________________ Retired: Altair 8800, PET, TI 99/4A, Apple II

I speculate because I'm debating getting a refurb since the updates to the 13" were lackluster. |
I wouldn't mind seeing the refurb prices drop that low, but I don't think it will happen. They generally stay pretty stable. Heck, even the white MacBooks are above that lower level now. |

i figured that the entry level 13" MBP is sold for $200 off retail. That will put the 2.4, 4ram, 250hdd at $999. The old top end was basically the same specs with exception of the processor. So they will price that a bit higher than the current low end ($1099 range?). But the 2.26, which is inferior in every category (and if the logic of the pricing of minis hold true), the 2.26 would have to be at least $180 less than the 2.4. I figure a solid $819-$849 range. But that's only my optimistic logic.
I have a bad feeling the 2.26 will be $899, because they know they will sell regardless. _________________ 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB, 250GB

How would the Core i3 processor have fit into the mix? I think it still comes with the integrated Intel HD Graphics, but performs slightly better than the Core 2 Duo.
I was interested in possibly buying the new entry-level 15" model, but the $100 dollar price increase and anti-glare HD screen option for $150 have me thinking otherwise. Apple being a little stingy with the hard drive at 320GB isn't helping either. I might just run my current MacBook Pro into the ground now, even though my wife was hoping to get the hand-me-down. Congrats to all that buy one though! I'm sure they are awesome systems. |

I really have the same mindset at this point. I'm going to buy an iPad here shortly to replace my Asus netbook. I don't feel like lugging around a big laptop any more. All I really need is a browser, email and word processor on the road. Plus, I've been forced to use a Dell Latitude at work.
If I were to buy one of the new MacBook Pros, it would be the entry-level 15" model. I think that model represents the sweet spot in the product line. Apple really crapped on the 13" models this time around. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

+1
I'm curious as to 256MB video ram vs 512MB video ram. Most discrete PC cards are 512MB or 1GB. Will 512MB in the MBP be a big improvement over 256? |

It may depend on what you do with your system, are you running graphic intense applications (like games, maybe developing for Flash, using Poser...)? I would think the average user won't really tell much of a difference, but power users might. The better the GPU, the less stress on the CPU. Most people would benefit by having a 2GHz+ CPU and more RAM, as opposed to Alienware-like graphics (which probably don't feel as good as in a MB Pro since Windows likely uses the GPU more than the applications running).
As far as the new graphics in the MB Pro, benchmarks seem to show a huge improvement - Apple also included automatic graphic switching, which is breakthrough, that means the computer can switch to dedicated Nvidia Graphics on the fly as needed - where with many PC's - you need to flip the switch to turn graphics on/off and restart.
By better than 256, are you comparing the GT 330M in the 15"/17" MB Pro's to the 320M in the 13"? The 320M will handle PureVideoHD and decode video - it was exclusively designed for Apple, based on the GT216 and features 48 shader cores. Apple claims the GT 330M is twice as fast as the 320M; however, the 320M is currently the fastest integrated graphics processor in the market.
...so anyways, to briefly answer the question, yes, it's a major improvement compared to the 256 integrated graphics in the new MB Pro, and the last-gen 256MB MB Pro's. |

This is good, but its available for all 3xx graphics (nvidia switching system rather than apple system).

No. i5 15" MBP have 256MB. i7 is only one with 512MB. Personally I don't consider the processor upgrade worth the extra money. But I'm wondering whether that extra 256MB for the GT330M will be worthwhile.
I also don't understand how these are "integrated". Mobile core processors all include an integrated intel graphics core in the chip. Surely that makes any extra nvidia graphics, discrete. BLAH - I do understand, 13" is C2D, so of course can have discrete. |

Well, the refurbs listed today:
2.26 $929 ("Save $270")
2.53 $1189 ("Save $310")
I guess people will buy them at this price, but they sure won't go quick. I just don't get how they can sell the refurb 2.53 at the same price as the new 2.4... _________________ 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB, 250GB
