Hillcrest Labs Unveils Kylo Web Browser for TV
Monday, March 22, 2010

Here's some news that you Mac mini-based HTPC users might find of interest. Hillcrest Labs, maker of the Loop Pointer mouse, today announced the release of the Kylo Web browser. It's a new browser designed specifically for Macs and PCs connected to a high-definition television set. I haven't had much of a chance to try things out on the big screen, but key features are said to include:
- an onscreen keyboard that appears when there is a need to enter text, eliminating the need for a physical keyboard;
- fonts, cursor, and onscreen targets are larger than those in traditional browser;
- easy zooming and panning;
- the maximization of useful viewing space by hiding or removing toolbars, tabs, buttons and indicators;
- easy bookmarking;
- a directory of links to dozens of popular Web sites;
- and a Mozilla-based design.
The Kylo Web browser is available now as a free download. Let me know what you think!

| I tend to use the Boxee browser or Safari, but cool. It would be REALLY cool if supported the Apple remote control. Maybe someone can work on something for Remote Buddy or something in the meantime though. |

It has potential because of all the sites it can load automatically, but it's buggy. I needed to triple-click on buttons for them to work on first launch, but now it seems to be working OK. Some videos can't be resized to fill the screen (but can be resized in Safari). Hulu video doesn't work.
A for effort, B for execution. |

| I think it has some potential. Having the Mozilla base won't hurt either. |

| It's a little buggy here and there, but not bad. I sort of like it. |

Found it to be buggy!!!!
But because of internet connection not because of software it seems the software needs a high speed connection. |

-I like that you can adjust the window to the edges of the screen (which can be a problem for some TVs; seeing all topics in the HTPC Forum; I've never experiended any issue, as my TV has DVI, and the Mac Mini recognized it directly as 1366x768)
-I like the large buttons
-I don't like that the buttons etc take up so much space at the bottom of the screen; one bar should suffice
-I especially don't like that to enable to read the web page, you can only enforce to use large Fonts; everything looks distorted. In Safari using Command +, all is proportionally scaled.
I'm sticking to Opera 9.27, with, Address Bar Font = Lucida Grand 18, Large buttons and Scale = 150% (the first is NOT an option in Opera 10, grumbl...)

| Is there a way to set this up and launch it from within the Boxee Beta? I know how to do with with Plex, but not Boxee. |

| No worries, thanks for replying. What kind of mouse do you use on your set-up? Part of the idea of Kylo is to work better from a distance, using a wireless mouse or pointer. |

I don't normally use a mouse, rather a remote. But I have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard (Rocketfish) for when I need them. |
