hey i was wondering if anyone has had any success hooking up thier mac mini to an older tv? i would have to get the dvi to s-video adaptor and then send that signal through an RF modulator to get the signal to go into an older tv. Has anyone been able to do this properly yet? and how does it look?

Since a regular TV signal uses 525 lines interlaced, really about 262 lines vertically, the resolution of a computer display that has been dumbed down for a TV RF tuner is likely to have an effective rsolution similar to a 320 by 200 display, in other words, similar to a 3G iPod.

I think it is likely to be very disappointing, and I'd suggest you do not invest too much effort or money in this idea without considering that you may not like the results.

I was surprised at how good the qualilty was through the s-video, but you wouldn't want to use a TV as a monitor. Good for watching videos though. If that is all you want to do then it may be okay. You may be able to find an old video with s-video/av style inputs and an RF output that you could use to test it out with.

most videos will be hardware encoded so it will appear very good on the screen with a primitive tv connection.. the desktop might look like shit

I've got my mini connected to a 20" JVC tv (via Apple's S-video/composite adapter). It's true, the desktop looks pretty poor. Just what you'd expect from an interlaced, low-res screen. Watching video on it looked awful good, though. Depends on the source, of course, for the general video quality. If your expectations are reasonable, I think this works like a charm.
