iTunes Store Tops 10 Billion Songs Sold
Thursday, February 25, 2010
Posted by: Glenn

Apple today announced that customers have purchased and downloaded over 10 billion songs from the iTunes Store. The 10 billionth song, "Guess Things Happen That Way" by Johnny Cash, was purchased by Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia. As the winner of the iTunes Countdown to 10 Billion Songs, Louie will receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

"We're grateful to all of our customers for helping us reach this amazing milestone," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of Internet Services. "We're proud that iTunes has become the number one music retailer in the world, and selling 10 billion songs is truly staggering."

According to the company, the iTunes Store now has a catalog of over 12 million songs, 55,000 TV episodes and 8,500 movies, with over 2,500 of those movies being available in high definition.

Cool song title for the winner. Things never happen that way for me. My life is more of a ring of fire. Wink

The song title seems too perfect. It's gotta be rigged. Laughing

Congrats to the winner though! I would have a lot of fun spending 10k in the store.

They probably had a 1000 songs download at the same time and Steve picked the one he liked out most. I seriously doubt that someone downloading a song like It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp would have won.

I stood absolutely no chance of winning. I haven't downloaded a single track from iTunes in a while now. I tend to rip my own CDs. Plus, I think the price increase to $1.29 for newer tracks has turned me off a little.

I've never downloaded a song from iTunes. If I were younger I'd be more inclined to do so, but I pretty much bought all the CD's I wanted in the 80's. When something new comes out that I like I still typically purchase the CD but that might be 1 every 5 years Smile .

Any random song that I feel like hearing that I don't own seems to be available on legal services. I doubt I will ever buy a song from iTunes.

Where Apple could potentially get my money is by replacing my cable service. It seems like that is still going to take a while.

I'm not sure they will ever get that one from me either. I think there's something to be said about coming home from a hard day's work and plopping down in front of the TV and watching live TV. I'm not really the kind of person that can live with "on demand" programming and downloads. I need my CNN, MSNBC, ESPN, MSG and so on.

I hear you about being younger for music though. I don't think this generation knows any other way now. But we're from another time and place. A time and place where the music actually rocked I might add. Ain't no Ke$ha in our top ten. Laughing

yeah, I think that way too. Jobs is way too strict to let a song with some weird name to win

Makes me wish that I had downloaded a Dylan song around that time. He seems to be one of Steve's favorites. Smile

Steve Jobs and Rosanne Cash actually called the winner, who happens to be 71. He didn't believe it was Steve on the phone.
