|
|
The iPad is the first Apple product in a while that has a proprietary chip. It does things in a new way. It is the creation of a new type of entertainment product that also does some work.
It's not a laptop though it can run Numbers, Keynote, Pages, e-mail, Safari and display photos.
It's not a cell phone but it runs all of the iPhone applications.
It's not an iPod but it has the capabilities to play music and video.
It's a new e-book reader and game platform. When programmers start making applications specifically for the iPad it will become a device that deserves its own hardware category.
I think it should have its own category because it is just different. I suppose many people see it as just a bigger version of the iPhone or iPod Touch. As someone who owns neither, the iPad seems very different.

To me it's just a big iPhone that can't make cell calls.

...and to me, it's just a giant iPod Touch with a 3G data option. _________________ Martin at HeadSpin HD now on Blu-ray |

I said NO because I don't feel any of the devices need to be "categorized". They are what you make of them.
Example: The Mac mini was not made to be a home theater device. That what Apple made TV for. As we know the mini makes a great home theater device; arguably better than the TV.
I think the iPad will be successful because it is not easily categorized (just like the Mac mini). |

But it also fails to excel in any one particular area, even a stone tablet has it beat.

I know you're joking, but the tablet does excel in a few areas. Currently it's the only tablet the has 150,000 apps written for it. It's the only tablet that syncs with the iTunes store (some people might not like this but non-techies will). As an e-reader is has the best screen. It's the fastest tablet. There are lots of things that this tablet is going to excel at. Others will play catch-up as Apple prepares the next version. |

I can't understand why its not 16:9. Can any one shed any light on that?
Its not really got its own chip. Ok it has, but its similar to the Snapdragon and Omap chips, where the manufacturer has engineered several bits of silicon IP together into a single SoC. According to reports the cpu is an Arm Cortex A-9 (same as snapdragon and latest omap). That is the generation after the one in the current iPhone 3GS. Maybe this year's iPhone will have the same core(s). |

the 16:9 shape is only good for movies, and not optimum for the majority of the uses of this tablet. most people would complain it was too skinny. but I agree if widescreen movie playback is your main use. it would be disappointing with the wasted screen space.
as far as why no separate hardware category. - It is not even an available item yet. Apple has not configured the site for the iPad past the introduction pages. The iPad is on the front page for now. I think it will get it's own category before sales start.
PS- I'm holding off iPad consideration until I see the new iPhone & iPhone 4.0 OS, new iPad features, data provider options and plans seem imminent. |

Ok, I'll go with that. But 1028x768 still seems underwhelming. The whole can play 720p thing doesn't seem that relevant if the display isn't at least 720p. 1280x800+. |

Yea, I like creating movies and slideshows in 16:9 in iMovie. my Mini is hooked to my 52" HDTV. so 16:9 is important.
I also was originally dismayed at the 4:3 iPad screen but the increased real estate over the iPhone and Touch is very welcome too.
We can zoom I guess. |

Technically, the iPad is a big iPhone, using the same microprocessor, upgraded version, the same iPhone OS, the same iPhone Apps. However, I also think the iPad is a revolutionary new product that will re-define a new class of computing in new ways we haven't thought of and in that sense, it deserves its own category. _________________ Retired: Altair 8800, PET, TI 99/4A, Apple II

For now it doesn't need it's own category. If it proves that it's a quality product, not just 1 month fad, then maybe _________________ Mac Mini early 2009, 2Ghz, 4GB memory, 320GB 7200 hdd, dual monitors |

Doesn't necessarily need its own section HERE because this is, primarily, a Mac mini-focused site.
Be happy you don't have everything consolidated into "all non-mini Apple products". _________________ -=iMav=-
