Apple Unveils iPad
Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Posted by: Glenn
Apple today introduced iPad, a new device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and more. The device features a responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch display that lets users physically interact with applications and content. It also includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store.
"iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before."
iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model.

It's kinda just a big iPod touch, but I still want one. I like that keyboard dock too. I'm not sure how much it's going to cost though. Anyone know? _________________ 2009 Mac mini with 500GB/4GB

No GPS, camera, or phone calls. iPhone still seems like a better choice for ultra mobile computing. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

A data only plan would be nice, but there's no way they are doing that with the iPhone. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Unless I read that wrong, 3g units wont be available for 90 days...
I'll go play with one when they arrive at the local Apple Store, but I hope they've updated their MBP lineup before 30-90 days, planning to purchase a 13" for school. _________________ --Marcus

Not having a camera is a bummer, but it has assisted GPS and the compass. I think so, right?

Yeah, it looks like April. It's the other models that will be out in March. I am going to wait for the 3g model though. |

Finally!!! ...I'll be ordering one too, likely with 3G, it'll make life easier.
It's not badly priced for what it can do, it's not much more than a NetBook or Sony's Daily Reader. ...and it's more portable than a NetBook, and better than a regular eReader.
I just have two concerns:
-Will PDF protected Ebooks work (like tech ebooks by Apress)?
-If I have an App I really like or use a lot on my iPhone, will I have to buy it again, or can I have the same App on both devices. I don't own multiple iPhone's, so not sure how that would work.
...I bet Amazon is planning a shift in strategy, probably focusing more on the Kindle App to make it better. |

I'm sure that's something they may be adding to the next touch release. ...it would make sense. |

You don't have to now. I have the same purchased apps on my iPod touch and iPhone. You just need to use the same iTunes account. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

$499 price tag
Dislikes:
No camera
No HDMI out
That's not enough to stop me from buying one though. I've been looking to replace my original iPod touch with a new one. I was just waiting for them to add a camera. Now, I'm just going to buy one of these. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

hdmi out - why? it's a non 16:9 lower res screen. and high res video would quickly fill up the available flash memory offered.
I love the prices, KB options, and the no contract, cheap data plans. |

For the most part I like it. I could care less about phone features. I could see where that be a deal breaker for some though. Lack of a a camera doesn't really bother me either. I am looking forward to the apps that will be created, the accessories that will be made and future updates if this takes off.
It has awesome potential for a lot of things and that is what I want to see.
Maybe I am not disapointed by this device becuase I had no preconcieved notions of what I thought it should be or what I wanted/wished it to be. It is what it is and nothing more, nothing less. Any one else feel this way? |
