I have always leaned towards using SD Cards when making a bootable portable operating system because its usually cheaper and easier to find a 2 or 4GB SD card than find a 2 or 4GB USB Pendrive for a comparable price in UK. I guess they are also less likely to be damaged.
Although many PCs don't have a SD Card Slot you can buy a USB adapter that looks just like a USB Pendrive, the SD Card is inserted into a slot in the side. I think the SD Card is faster but I don't think there's much in it to the naked eye.
I think the point I was making really is that it is much better to use either a USB Pendrive or SD Card (whichever you have to hand) rather than using a HDD which in my experience is less reliable and less likely to work and will also generally involve screwing and unbolting stuff inside your employer's work PC.
Screwing and unbolting stuff is more likely to make your boss very anxious. |

Very true. And by the way, I'm learning a great deal from the posts in this thread!
Well, I packed a couple of CD-ROMs into my rucksack this morning marked "Ubuntu 6.06" and "Knoppix 5.10". But I didn't get a chance to try either of them because I had to run an errand during my lunch break. However, I'll take them again tomorrow and see if I get another chance to try them out... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Just an update. The motherboard does indeed have an option of USB on its "Boot Priority" list. I also tried to boot the machine from the Ubuntu 6.06 CD, but the boot process just froze, so I had to pull the plug on the machine. I'll have another go at experimenting on Monday. _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Good news: I tried again and this time, the computer booted from both CDs...
Bad news: I wanted to start some apps and play around, but I couldn't; the mouse cursor started in the middle of the screen and stayed in the middle of the screen! No matter what I did to the mouse, it wouldn't move. I had to "reboot" the computer with the assistance of the power lead... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Well JB.
Freeze or no freeze, your getting there.
And that's what counts.
Cheers

Thanks Aqua. Next time, I'll plug a USB mouse in and see if that gets me any closer to success... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

The USB mouse didn't work. I don't know why Ubuntu won't recognise either a PS/2 mouse or a USB mouse... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Try a newer version of Ubuntu than 6.06. That version is 3 1/2 years old. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Fox, as I write this, the CD image of version 9.10 is trickling along my telephone line...
(I was going to take Saul's advice and go for 8.04 for its optimisation and older drivers -- but then I saw the screengrabs of 9.10... ) _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Maybe you should try a different distro, Debian, Mint Linux(based on ubuntu) or puppy linux. Even though some rank Ubuntu #1 for newbies, alot of times its not. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

Ghosty is right.
Back in my olden days...
I thought I had busted my iMac when I first tried a copy of PPC Ubuntu.
The current Ubuntu is still is having some technical issues.
Try Mint or even TinyMe or even PClinuxOS.
Cheers

The only issue I had with 9.10 was a minor one on my netbook, and the bug has been fixed. 9.10 seems to have issues with some hardware, but so have past 'buntus and go have pretty much all distros. If 9.10 doesn't work on your boss's hardware, JohnnyBoy, one of the other suggestions in this thread is bound to, including earlier versions of Ubuntu. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Well... (drum roll)... Ubuntu 9.10 worked just fine, complete with a moving mouse pointer!
In fact, it was better than "just fine" -- it was amazingly responsive compared to WinXP, even though it was running from the CD-ROM drive in 1Gbyte of memory. I didn't have much time to play around (it was during lunch break) but I was still amazed with the way Ubuntu auto-detected the connection settings for the office ethernet and broadband. All I did was click the Firefox icon, and up popped the Google homepage. The only other time that I've ever seen such a painless performance was using OS X. I'm really impressed! _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Indeed they are, Aqua!
I showed the Ubuntu desktop and the OpenOffice spreadsheet program to Mark (the boss), and I explained that they were more stable and ran faster than their Micro$oft equivalents. And that they cost nothing. He nodded slowly, but was frowning slightly. I added that Linux wouldn't run AutoCAD or QuickBooks natively -- we'd have to use some trickery to get those to run under Ubuntu. Then he frowned a bit more and went back to his desk. I shut Ubuntu down and rebooted into XP so that I could finish the AutoCAD drawing that I was working on.
I don't think that the office will be converting to Linux. But I gave it a good shot. _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b
