BumpTop for Mac Released
Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Posted by: Kenan
Bump Technologies today announced the release of BumpTop for Mac 1.0, a new version of their 3D desktop replacement software for Mac users. They've had a version out for Windows users for almost a year now, but this is the first one for us. And according to the company, it's not just a port either. It's been completely re-written from the ground up to seamlessly integrate Mac OS X features like Exposé and Quick Look. They've also added multi-touch trackpad gestures and pile flipping functionality to the software, so that brings it to the next level as well. I mean, it really feels at home on the Mac. I would most definitely check out the free version if you're interested.

I like keeping my desktop empty for the most part, but that's really cool. It doesn't seem to hammer your system either.

I like when companies push the edge and think differently with this kind of software. I just never end up using it more than a couple days in a row. I guess that I'm just a creature of habit when it comes to having my desktop a certain way. I sort of do the same thing with browsers. I'll try Chrome, Firefox or Opera for a couple days when a new version comes out, but then go right back to using Safari.

I saw this running on an HP Touchsmart laptop and it was pretty cool. I'll have to give it a try.

It's neat, but $30 seems a little steep for the "Pro" features. I'm sure they do add a lot to the experience though.

I would love to have the 23" multi-touch AIO desktop they make. They have a lot of neat stuff on there. _________________ 2009 Mac mini with 500GB/4GB

That sure is different. I don't use my desktop much, its just kind of 'there', so I don't know how much I'd use this. However, I do like the look and the ability to post stuff up on the walls. I think I'll have to give this a try, just cuz. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

That looks cool, but I also hardly ever use my desktop so I don't think its something I'd want to use. _________________ Phil

It looks neat in the video, but how's it looking in Activity Monitor? Does it bang your CPU and memory hard?

Guess I wont be trying it on my Hackintosh though. It doesn't want to run there. That leaves the MacBook. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

This type of program doesn't appeal to me. I'm a bit of a minimalist. The best thing I liked about the demo was the ability to go to a standard 2D mode. I also liked the individual icon resizing.

I didn't think I would like this very much, but I tried it and it is pretty cool.
Don't have any problems running it on Hackintosh, either. |

Thats interesting, it keeps quitting on my Compaq Mini running 10.5.7. Haven't gotten a chance to run it on any other machine yet. Guess I'll have to try again. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport
