Mozilla today announced the release of Firefox 3.6, a significant update to their popular open source Web browser. This version of the software is built on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. The update also brings improved performance and support for a new type of theme called Personas that allows users to change the look of the browser without having to restart.

Other notable features and improvements include:

- Protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse.
- Open, native video can now be displayed full screen and supports poster frames.
- Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.
- The ability for web developers to indicate that scripts should run asynchronously to speed up page load times.
- Continued support for downloadable web fonts using the new WOFF font format.
- Support for new CSS attributes such as gradients, background sizing, and pointer events.
- Support for new DOM and HTML5 specifications including the Drag & Drop API and the File API, which allow for more interactive web pages.
- Changes to how third-party software can integrate with Firefox in order to prevent crashes.

Firefox 3.6 weighs in at 18.6MB and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

I'm using both firefox 3.6 and chromium. Firefox 3.6 is notably faster than Chromium for me so far.

I wouldn't say it's any faster than Chromium for me, but it does seem as fast, and this is a big improvement.

I still think Chrome is a tad faster, but it's much closer than with 3.5.

I always fear updating FF because some add-ons I use are usually not supported early on. I've gone back to earlier FF versions because of add-ons.
I use a QuickPageZoom and used to use a Mouse gestures.

No update notification, so I go to the firefox website and they specifically say you don't have to uninstall your present version just install is over your present version.

Well, it refused to install because it said info.plist was in use. Now my old version of firefox is damaged/incomplete and I cannot open it or access any plist files.

I didn't have any trouble installing Firefox 3.6 over the previous release in my applications folder. I did have everything closed though.

I think it's really fast too! I'm not sure why we can't get over the Acid 3 Test hurdle though. What's up with that Mozilla?

I like how you can mouseover and get a preview of the Personas themes. That's the best way I've ever seen something implemented like that for previewing and installation.

This is annoying:

If you go to "full screen" then go back to regular screen format your yellow "minimize to doc" button becomes disabled. You have to close and quit Firefox and then relaunch to use that button.

I had toyed with FF 3.6 a few weeks ago and most
of my Add-On's didn't work and it lost all of my bookmarks.

Went back to FF 3.5 and had to put my bookmarks
back manually. I'll wait another month and try FF 3.6
again.

I must say, I've been using "Opera" a little more
often and its very polished. Many of the Add-On's
I use with FF come as a standard features in "Opera".

Has anyone tried "Shiira"? I've used it in the past
and it was way ahead of all the other browsers.
It hasn't been developed for a while now and most of the
popular browsers have caught up then surpassed it.
Shiira has a really cool icon but to see it you must download
and install it. HERE'S the link if you want to play. The link is kind of funky. Just Google it.
