Apple misses deadline for Bootcamp

Will Bootcamp run Linux?

In a different post I commented that I'm interested in running Linux. I looked over several distros and think I'll go with Mint or Mandriva. I just need to find the time to work out how to dual boot them on my HP computer running Vista. Command line is something totally foreign to me. I've never set up a dual boot anything so it all seems daunting.

I need to keep Vista because I use Netflix to stream videos. It uses the Starz channel for live streaming. That isn't compatible with Safari or Firefox. The stored movies will stream but not the Starz channel.

If I like Linux better than Vista then it would be useful to start doing work using it instead of using Microsoft products. I already use Open Office and like their word processor. It does have bugs but it works OK. Some open source programs also work on Leopard. That means that sharing files between Linux and my Mac would be possible. If that were the case then I would only boot Vista to watch movies on the Starz channel and nothing else.

I don't want to spend money on Parallels or an equivalent program to run Linux on my Mac. It doesn't seem worth it to me right now. Maybe if I fall in love with Linux I'll change my mind. First I need to get it running and see if I like it.

Can anybody recommend a really good Linux Mint forum that is gentle on inexperienced users?

Download either one (or both) and burn it to
a DVD using your Mac's "Disc Utility". Most Linux
Distros now, when created that way will be a "Live
DVD".

Your Mac will boot from the "Live DVD" and run like its
installed on your HD. Its not on your HD so it will be
slower than if it were installed on your HD. Doing this

interact with your Mac's hardware. You'll know if your
Wi-Fi and Blue Tooth works etc. You can make some
changes to configure the Linux OS to your liking.
The changes won't stick because remember the Linux
OS is running from the DVD and not your HD.

If your unsure how to burn a DVD using the Mac's
Disc Utility let us know. If you end up wanting to use
a Linux Disro you can use Parallels, VMware or
Virtual Box and run it at the same time as your Mac OS.

There are also ways to install the Linux OS on your HD
and boot from it like Boot Camp, so you could run
either or.

I'm really disappointed that Apple missed their self-imposed release date for new drivers. I have several issues with my MacBook Pro and Mac mini now. Trackpad and bluetooth issues on the MacBook Pro side and bluetooth issues on the Mac mini side of things. Here's hoping they get something out soon!

Along with others, I was a bit perplexed that Apple never released an updated statement about W7 support, explaining why it missed the deadline. The last we heard from them was back in October '09. But I did see this from last week, basically saying it will be released when it is ready. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920

At least they haven't forgotten the issue.

Looks like it is here now. Since it's an exe. file I assume it has to be downloaded in windows for the update.
