Well i decided to take a stab at another old school macintosh.
Went to my local RE PC Store and purchased this.
Powermac G4 AGP tower 400 MHZ
384 Megs of ram
13 GiG hard drive
DVD-ROM Drive
Zip 100 Drive
System 9.1
Total cost $60.00
I decided to make a dedicated Itunes Server out of it to stream music through out my house.
I decided due to limitations of the machine to install tiger instead of leopard.
Here is what i did.
Went to my local RE PC store purchased a 52x light scribe DVD/CD-RW/CD-R/DVD-DL for $90.00
(Yes i know a little expensive but i wanted the option to burn fast even if the processor is slow)
I then purchased 4 sticks of 256 Meg sticks of ram for a total of 1.2 gig's of ram at $10.00 a stick.
I Then purchased 1 80 gig hard drive and 1 120 gig hard drive: Total 34.00
Installed them into the machine then installed Bare Bones mac os x tiger.
Now my system specs are.
Powermac G4 AGP Tower 400 Mhz
1.2 gig's of ram
2 hard drives
120 Gig
80 Gig
mac os x tiger 10.4.11 Bare Bones w/itunes 9 installed.
All for $224 dollers |

Upgraded to a new Lacie USB 2.0 card!!!!
All i have to say is wow!!!!!!!
I installed the card and not only did my g4 server project speed up it totally changed the loading time.
I had always Heard about how the older USB 1.1 cards slowed down the g4 towers just never expected it to be that much faster!!!
And i do mean faster!!! |

| wish I picked up a G4 tower instead. The "iLamp" don't give much options in terms of expansion. All I can do is new hd, max out the ram. SD Ram are so hard to come by. I don't want to put out money for it. So far the only cost on my part is and old hd I pulled from my old winbox that died. Got 2 stick of SD ram with unknown size. If I really must I might just cave and buy em... |

The lamp version's are not that bad!!!
The only failure with that lamp version was the heat sink they placed a heavy heat sink inside the computer to vent heat from the processor the hard drive the cd-rom/dvd-rom drive.
All that heat will soon cause hard drive failure so not surprising they stopped making that model.
but every macintosh has it's day!!!!
And sooner or later something will need tuned or upgraded!!! |
