OWC today announced the release of their new Mercury Pro Blu-ray external drives. The drives come in 8x and 12x speeds and feature a quad-interface of FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB and eSATA. They also include two 25GB BD-R discs, connecting cables for all four interfaces, and a one-year warranty. The Mercury Pro Blu-ray external drives in speeds of 8x and 12x are priced at $299 and $349, respectively. OWC also offers a special "Mac version" of each drive, which comes bundled with Toast 10 Titanium Pro, for $100 more.

Nice to see companies are still moving towards Blu-ray technology. It's been very slow going. Prices are still a little steep, but not too bad. I remember when external CD-R first came out about 10+ years ago they were $1000. We've come a long way.
I like the Toast option. |

Looks like a nice drive. I would buy one in a heartbeat if Snow Leopard supported the playback of commercial movies. |

I'd buy one, if there was an easy way to backup MY BD discs for playback in other BD players or play through a HD mediaplayer! _________________ ___________________Jim©

Very frustrating that you can use it as a data disc but can't play BD movies! |

For backups only its cheaper to just buy hard drives. _________________ Phil

They all started out this way. CD-R, DVD-R and now BD-R. Eventually the price of the blank media will come down. If BD-R blanks get down to $.20 like DVD-R blanks that's much better than hard drive prices.
Hard drives are are subject to mechanical failure, magnets, water damage etc. If you want to make a back-up to store off site disks may be more convenient.
There are pluses and minuses for both. |

BD is much more a bag of hurt than DVD-/+R ever was, I never saw so many restrictions in a burner, even one has to buy one year licences and such. Time the Chinese bring some copy free machines on the market! _________________ ___________________Jim©

Perhaps. I wonder if something has loosened up on that level with regular dual layer DVD discs? Prices are really starting to fall here in the States. |
