It looks like parenthesis in URLs aren't working in the forum, so here's a short one: http://tr.im/kSHh |

Nothing new this weekend after all - I got "sidetracked" by my wife's first mothers day!
I won't have the drive until the last weekend of the month, so I'm not in a huge hurry anyway. I am going to try for this week on the pictures though. |

| This doesn't work in a 2009 Mac Mini, or does it? |

I think this will not work without additional drivers ... or will not work at all. Because a physical sata device will be connected to pcie slot but not to sata controller. So in theory we must send and receive ATA commands to drive over the pcie bus. By now we send commands to the controller over pcie and a controller sends commands to drive.
So i think we need normal SATA controller made as minipce card.
Info about minipcie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express_Mini_Card#PCI_Express_Mini_Card
No direct sata connection according to this info.
The only benefit from this adapter is an additonal internal USB port.
May be a device like that is reasonable: http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-mini-pcie-ssd-up-to-64gb-of-super-compact-storage-2347726/
I think that this mini pcie ssd contains a controller over a pcie bus and a controller offers a block device to operationg system via some drivers.
We need this http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=11749 device but with mini pcie.
Update: i found that: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=45775 (this topic contains asus eee pc pcie-like slot pinout)
I think this brando adapter is for Asus EEEPC computers, because EEE PC contains a minipcie form factor slot, but pinout is different and EEE PC slot contains sata not pcie TX and RX lines! _________________ With best regards, Eugene

| My question regarding the "mac mini 2009", is more related to the fact that "mac mini 2009" doesn't have a mini-pcie connector, or does it? |

According to this http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Mac-mini-A1283/659/2 , mini'2009 really doesn't have a mini pcie. _________________ With best regards, Eugene

It absolutely will not work at all on a Mini.
It will not work on any computer as there is not SATA controller. This is just an interface for the SATA data to be put on the PCIe buss. You still have to get a SATA controller with drivers for a Mac and an external power supply.
You can not simply plug the drive into that card and expect to be able to use the drive. SATA drives need SATA controllers and drivers. |

Drivers is not the problem, there are SATA controllers and drivers available for Mac OS X.
The problem is: there is no standard form factor pci-e connector available any longer since Mac Mini version 2009. |

That's why it won't work in the 2009, but you need to read the entire thread.
These folks are trying to control a SATA drive without a controller. The PCB they want to use will not work. |

I think that this is an adaper. GL850A chip is a 4 port USB hub, and mini PCI-E pins are connected directly to the compact flash socket. So there is only physical compatibility with mini PCI-E slot and putting this card to mac mini could even damage the mac mini. _________________ With best regards, Eugene

This is intriguing, shame they've removed pretty much all upgrade potential in the mini 09's.
I think even the dual-band wifi radio is soldered right in instead of plugged in via miniPCIe.
The only upgradeable components nowadays are RAM & Hard disks! Grrr.... |
