Apple today unveiled an all new iMac line featuring LED-backlit 21.5 and 27-inch widescreen displays in a new edge-to-edge glass design and seamless all aluminum enclosure. The new iMac line, starting at $1,199, is the fastest ever with Intel Core 2 Duo processors starting at 3.06 GHz, and Core i5 and i7 quad-core processors for up to twice the performance. Every new iMac ships with a wireless keyboard and the all new wireless Magic Mouse, the world's first mouse with Multi-Touch technology pioneered by Apple on the iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpad.
The new 21.5-inch 3.06 GHz iMac, for a suggested retail price of $1,199 (US), includes:
- 21.5-inch 1920 x 1080 LED-backlit display;
- 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB shared L2 cache;
- 4GB 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM expandable to 16GB;
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics;
- 500GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 7200 rpm;

I would buy one, but I can't look past those glossy screens. It's a dealbreaker.

This one hurts a bit. I hadn't anticipated this upgrade and I bought a 20" iMac two months ago. The new one has a much better display AND a lower Canadian price. At least I got a free iPod Touch with the one I bought (educator deal). Still, I'm tempted to put my iMac up for sale and buy the new one.

Yeah, this is probably the most tempting iMac to come down the pike in sometime. From the specs and better screen, to the new design with a smaller chin and silver back. My only complaint beyond the glossy screens would be with pricing. I think Apple could have done a little better in that department.

Put it up for sale today! I did this with my last Mini. Put it on ebay the same day as the last time the Mini's came out, with a 24hr auction and got about a $100 more than I would have if I had waited a week.

Don't know where I've been, but I'm surprised to hear you even bought an iMac Fox. I sort of thought you didn't care for the glossy screens. 
This is an awesome update for the iMac, but once again it's the screen turning me off. Why can't they just offer one with a matte? I would even be willing to $50 more.  |

Just a little feedback. I have a 20" ACD matte and I really like my girlfriends iMac with the glass front. It is much nicer to look at. Very bright, very vibrant. |

I think the contrast and colors are much better, but don't you find the reflections to be annoying? I also think it becomes distracting when darker colors are being shown on the screen. It like turns into a mirror and you end up staring at yourself. |

I agree with everything you say, but overall I still like the screen for home use. Initially I thought I wouldn't like the iMac, or I was at least skeptical. I wouldn't want one if I had to work in an office with a window at my back.
For our needs the iMac is excellent. During the day just close the curtains and you'll be fine. In the evening, don't have a light source directly behind you. Having a light colored desktop background helps. Usually when typing you are working on a white background so that isn't an issue.
These might seem like a lot of restrictions, but realistically they are not. If I'm watching something with lots of black like a movie, I dim the lights or I stream content to the TV. The TV is a Plasma, so of course it has a glass front too, again not an issue.
I wouldn't recommend an iMac or Plasma TV for strictly day time viewing or in uncontrollable brightly lit settings.
Pro's and con's just like anything else. I guess I just have to say have an open mind. I didn't think I would like the iMac until I actually used one. |

I was going to post a picture of Charlton Heston holding an older Cinema saying "from my dead cold hands", but I just don't have the PS skills like I used to anymore. 
These new iMacs look extremely sexy if you're into the AIO thing though. The smaller chin and aluminum back make it look much nicer than the previous model. Also got some nice chips in those suckers. |

| I'm glad Apple put some i5 and i7 Quads in the iMac. I'm so sick of reading the Apple Bashing over Quad Cores on MacRumors. But I don't need Quad Core or the big price tag. I'm getting a Mac Mini! |

I've been holding off on getting myself an iMac, but I think that the 27" model with the Radeon 4850 would be satisfactory. I would make the jump now, however, my current financial state prevents it 
Oh well, there's always going to be a better one in a year or less...

I'm in the same boat. You read about these people going through Macs every couple months and whining about the littlest things and it makes you feel like a real loser.
I do think the iMac is next on my list though. That said, the new 2.53GHz Mac mini is a pretty good deal and I already have two displays. I guess we'll see down the road. |

I appreciate your opinion, but I just don't care for the glare. I mean, the specs of the IPS panel are great otherwise. There's no doubt the quality is there behind the glass.
