Mac mini and iMac Updates Soon?
Thursday, October 1, 2009
Posted by: Brian

Well, the Apple rumor mill is heating up about the Mac mini and iMac getting updated this month. We haven't been able to confirm much when it comes to the possibility of the Mac mini being updated or new pricing, but here's what we've been able to learn so far. The SKU for the low-end model has reportedly been discontinued, stock levels of both models (new and refurb) are sitting at lows, and the ship dates of both models have slipped from 24 hours to 1-3 days. Plus, we are now sitting at 31 weeks since the last update. The average time between updates has been 36 weeks since the Mac mini was introduced in 2005. Based on this evidence, things are indeed looking good for an update here in October. Then again, if we've learned anything over the last few years, it's that nothing is a given when it comes to the Mac mini being updated. So welcome, my friends, to the trick or treat month. What's it going to be?

Probably a trick, but I tried to get a guy to buy a new mac ( now, well about two months ago) and he swore quad cores would be coming out this fall ( at the very least for the macbooks). I really don't know what he meant something about another company and blah blah because that's all I heard. I kept thinking how long it took for the last update so I found it hard to believe. Plus he never owned a mac. Then again now I don't know. I'm happy with mine as is, but quad core would be very tempting. Very Happy

I would buy another Mac mini in a heartbeat if they went quad-core. I'm just looking for ways to speed up encoding these days. The addition of Blu-ray drive might also get me off the fence. It will probably just be a minor component refresh if anything though. I surely don't see them changing the design or port offerings at this point. That will probably be saved for next year.

Not expecting too much, but hopefully a little spec bump and prices improving to reflect the improved AUD

I'd really like to see them change up the coloring of the top of the case to black and silver. Black goes better with most entertainment centers and computer monitors out there.

I think the $799 model becomes the $599 model. I can also see them upping the C2D to 2.2GHz or 2.4GHz as well. That's probably the extent of the upgrades now that Steve is back. He's too tied to the iMac to really care about the Mac mini, which is a shame. I'm just not a fan of all-in-ones or glass screens.

What's wrong with embracing the rumors? Certainly it doesn't hurt anyone.

Like I've said in the other thread, I'm waiting patiently this month and if there is nothing new by the 31st I'll buy whatever is available.

What? I've been coming to this site for years. It's probably one of the most conservative Mac sites out there when it comes to posting rumors. So I don't have problems with it Hackers.

I would probably hold out for the month too. I think something is up here.

Me too! And I love the rumors. How else can we find out what's going on? Smile

I'm praying that Apple doesn't update the Mac mini. I just got a new one a couple weeks ago. Laughing

Just kidding! I feel for you guys waiting around. I played that waiting game a couple years ago when the Intel Mac minis first came out. It wasn't very much fun. Sad

It could just be a component or parts shortage. That being said, they are going to need all the ammo they can get under the $1000 mark once Windows 7 starts shipping. Perhaps Apple will make the Mac mini and MacBook more attractive now from a hardware standpoint. We know they have it in the software department to compete.

I would need a significant speed bump / Quad Core and more importantly a cheaper mac mini, to get me to open my wallet and add to my Mac Collection and I know a cheaper mini won't happen. Sad

I'm not really looking for a new one and I'm very happy with the speed of my 1.83 C2D even with the GMA video, but there is a PPC mini on my daughter's desk that I would consider replacing with mine should a seriously upgraded inexpensive alternative come out. I recently replaced my G4 PowerBook with a MacBook Pro 13.3, and I could do the same with our next-to-last PPC Mac. The last, a Cube, is a sentimental favourite and I probably won't replace it until it dies.
