Apple Launches New Environment Site

Apple has updated their website with a new section focusing on how its products are impacting the environment. The section is divided into four categories, including Life Cycle Impact, Product Usage Impact, and Product Environmental Reports. They also have a subsection for posting news and updates, which also provides a timeline of their environmental efforts. So, if you're interested in learning more about Apple's impact on the environment, you should definitely check it out. I found the site to be most informative.

It is nice to see that Apple is still putting effort into being a progressive company.

Cough fire cough risk. I think Apple should be taking back all 1G iPod nanos and replacing them with new ones.

I honestly applaud these efforts. That being said, I think Apple needs to do better with software releases. The retail boxes for Apple software might be smaller than ever, but the boxes they come shipped in are still oversized. My copy of Snow Leopard came in a rather large box taped into an inner box thingy. That really seemed wasteful to me. I know there are more important issues with materials and stuff, but sometimes it's the small stuff that makes a big difference.

I agree, especially AppleCare. Why even use a box to sell a warranty. It comes with a disk utility program but that can be downloaded. It's actually on Apple's site.
Apple still has a long way to go in my opinion. Here is a personal story of my recent purchase.
I ordered a refurb 24" iMac, a back to school iPod promo and AppleCare for my girlfriend. The next day she changed her mind and wanted a new machine instead of a refurb. I called Apple. they had not shipped the refurb, but told me the process has already began so it was GOING to ship regardless. They did a return authorization and told me to send it back once I received it. Talk about a waste of time, money and cost to the environment.
Anyhow when I got the original order it shipped through three different shipping companies. UPS, Purolator and FedEx. Of course I wasn't home for any of them, so I had to drive across town to the pick-up depots.
The iMac box shipped inside a big brown box. The Apple care box shipped inside a brown box. The iPod box shipped inside a brown box as well.
Then I had to send in the mail in rebate for the iPod, this involved a blank cheque and 9 pages of paper. Each order was invoiced separately and required a 4 page print out, plus the rebate form.
Then Apple mailed me a letter with the return info on the refurb once they received it back from me.
Honestly this has been a horrible experience. It cost me many hours of time, quite a bit of gas, paper etc. I would have thought online ordering would have been a friendly experience, but I'll stick to going straight to the Apple store with my V-8 engine. I'll use less gas, save time, money and cause less harm to the planet. |

The same can be said for MobileMe. I don't think it includes anything beyond your code and stickers. So that's a total waste of paper, packaging and transportation. |

I think it's good for Apple to this site, especially when a certain environmental group targets Apple for the sole purpose of getting all the zealots hackles up.

Wow, things must be getting serious now.

I know some people are anal and want a pristine product box, but shipping a box within a larger brown box is a waste in my book. This isn't porn we're talking about.

All mail-in rebates should be handled online. Going snail mail is just a waste of time and resources.
