Apple Drops Price of 160GB Apple TV
Monday, September 14, 2009

Apple quietly dropped the 40GB Apple TV from their product line this morning. It has now been replaced by the 160GB Apple TV at the same $229 price point. The 160GB model was previously priced at $329, so this represents a $100 price cut. The features of the 160GB model are basically the same otherwise.

This makes me feel even worse about paying $299 for a 40GB when they first came out, but I guess time marches on. Oh well, I just wish they would do something with that bloody USB port and Hulu at this point. I don't feel like messing around with the aTV Flash and Boxees of the world. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| I had fun with the Apple TV back in the old hacking days, but I'm glad that I sold it for another Mac mini. Freedom from iTunes is priceless. |

| I'm don't know if this is a good time to buy in the grand scope of things, but I've been thinking about grabbing one to extend my Mac mini to another TV. Do you guys think this is just a way of clearing out the old for a new model? The Apple TV is long in the tooth update wise. |

I have all my media on a mini in one room and want to stream it to another room. I have been thinking about an Apple Tv because I just can't afford another mini right now. Two things have stood in the way:
1. Hulu access without Boxee or some other nonsense
2. A feeling that something big will happen to Apple TV soon. |

That's what I'm afraid of happening. I have a feeling this might be a step towards clearing them out before the holidays. |

I agree, Apple may be trying to clear stock. I do miss my AppleTV sometimes though. |

| I agree. The Mac TV is now a very attractive option to augment the Mac Mini with at this price point with the larger disk drive. I may get one too! |

No proof, but I see it staying the same for the rest of the year. Changes in 2010 seem likely though. I don't see those changes being drastic though. It will probably be more in the way of software. And this software will more than likely be made available to those of us with the older model. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| I still think the Apple TV is too expensive for what it does. It would probably do much better at around $170. At least when you compare it to the Xbox 360 or PS3. Which in my opinion, are probably better for HD, streaming and entertainment anyways. |
