Is it enought to just backup my user directory? I'm backing up eveything except the Music folder (cause it's big and I have a copy on another computers) and the Applications folder. So if disaster strikes, will I be able to get everything back? I figure I can reinstall all my programs from their own disks or by re-downloading the application. _________________ Mac mini powered up on 2-11-2005 |

Home directory would be the only thing critical (especially if you don't have a problem with re-installing all your applications). _________________ -=iMav=-

I'm using a 1GB Sandisk Cruzer to back up my documents for now. Those articles will come in handy as my Hard Drive gets filled and I look for better methods of doing backups! |

| Buy an external drive >= the size of your internal drive. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your drive. Put it as reoccuring on your calendar so you'll be reminded. |

Well, I could do drive -> drive, but that doesn't give me an offsite copy which I really want. It also seems like overkill since the drive would be about $100 and I can get CDs for almost free on sale. _________________ Mac mini powered up on 2-11-2005 |

I think CD/DVD/Flash are safer ways to back up because the external drive can always fail like the internal hard drive can. The benefit of a using an external drive is speed, convenience and storage space. I guess it comes down to personal choice and what you think your documents are going to be safest, or, how broke you are after buying buying a new Mac mini and Apple cinema display. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Whatever floats your boat, but burning CDs/DVDs is time consuming compared to an external firewire backup. If you want to backup stuff offsite, buy some space from a webhosting company and use rsync over ssh to only backup changes. |

.mac is great for backing up documents, etc. and keeping them insync between multiple machines. But the amount of space makes it not worth the cost. I had it for a year when I had multiple Macs, but I can't justify for a single Mac. |

Is there a way to do timed auto backups? Say I throw in a DVD at bed time, and have the backup run at 2am? _________________ Mac mini powered up on 2-11-2005 |

Not that I know of without some other software... hence why I said burning CDs/DVDs is time consuming compared to an external firewire backup.
You can schedule a cronjob to copy your stuff off to an external drive or rsync it to a remote site. |

Not sure how you'd burn a dvd from the command line. Perhaps you could applescript it. Let me know how that turns out |
