Posted by: Glenn

Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Update via its Software Update utility and on the Web. According to the company, this update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac. So here's what's new and improved:

- Upgrades Safari to version 4.0.2.
- Improves the accuracy of full history search in Safari 4.
- Resolves an issue in which certain resolutions might not appear in the Display pane in System Preferences.
- Dragging an Aperture image into Automator now invokes an Aperture action instead of incorrectly invoking an iPhoto action.
- Resolves an issue that could prevent importing of large photo and movie files from digital cameras.
- Improves overall Bluetooth reliability with external devices, USB webcams and printers.
- Addresses an issue that could cause extended startup times.
- Improves iCal reliability with MobileMe Sync and CalDav.
- Addresses data reliability issues with iDisk and MobileMe.
- Improves overall reliability with AFP.
- Improves overall reliability with Managed Client.
- Improves compatibility and reliability for joining AirPort networks.
- Improves Sync Service reliability.
- Includes additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras.
- Improves compatibility with some external USB hard drives.
- Includes latest security fixes.

The Mac OS X 10.5.8 Update weighs in at 274MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5.7. A Combo update for Mac OS X 10.5.8 is also available here. It weighs in at 759MB.

I don't see anything mentioned, but I hope this helps some with video issues I've been having. All seems well so far.

It would have been nice to know the actual issue. My startup times seem to be getting slower and slower these days.

+1

I read something elsewhere about 10.5.8 including a fix for external monitors and coming out of sleep mode. I don't see anything mentioned in the release notes though. It does mention fixing a problem with certain resolutions showing up in the Display pane. I know that was a big problem with 10.5.7.

I noticed they got rid of that fugly purple iDisk icon in the Finder device menu. It's a much better looking blue now. That alone should be a reason to upgrade. Wink

I tend to stay on the blue screen longer now before the desktop shows. I haven't installed 10.5.8 yet, but I hope it helps me speed past that thing.

I just started to download the combo update and looks like it might take a while.

I don't notice an ounce of difference. In fact, it might even be a tad slower. Sad

I'm already bored with 10.5.8. Time to bring on Snow Leopard! Smile

No problems here. You might try repairing your disk permissions or reinstalling Firefox.

So far RAM usage seems a tad bit better. Sorry to say Safari still feels slow.
