|
|
In the last few days, Microsoft and Yahoo have announced a union of sorts.
http://www.forbes.com/2009/07/29/yahoo-microsoft-commerce-markets-transcript-earnings.html
It makes me wonder if Apple & Google will make similar arrangements in order to thwart the Yahoo : Microsoft arrangement.
Much is at stake : particulary in the field of Cloud computing.
So do you guys think Google & Apple will become allies in this field, or will they go it alone ?

I doubt Apple and Google will make similar arrangements. Haven't heard any speculation. You would think that there would have been talks of such action many moons ago when MicroSoft attempted to purchase Yahoo.
It kind of makes me wonder if there will be some sort of legal kerfuffle. How is this any different than when M$ was getting thrashed for building internet explorer into the OS? I haven't really thought about this until now, so I might not be making much sense. |

I think they will go it alone. Apple has MobileMe for a fee, but Google likes doing everything for free. |

That's if free = ad revenue
Good point with the MobileMe. Even though Apple could work with Google, I'm not so sure Apple wants to be a "ad revenue" type of company. It sort of goes against traditional Apple thinking.
I'm sure glad my mini wasn't loaded with ad crap to subsidize the cost. |

Couple of points.
Apple is already working with Google.
Don't forget, Google has a representative on Apples' board of directors.
Secondly, as far as income for ads is concerned. That would be like money for nothing as far as Apple is concerned. And given Apples hunger for profits, I doubt they will turn their noses up at any stream of revenue.
I also think that Apple is not quite as 'tradition bound' as you might think.
Apple has moved architectures a number times of times in its life, 68K, PPC, Intel....
It has also transitioned from a purely computer driven company to an online entertainment company.
So who knows what the future holds.
My best guess, is that at minimum Apple & Google will carry out market analysis's of their own, then pool their findings, to assess what the move of MS & Yahoo will mean to their market positions.
In the long term, I seriously doubt they will sit on their hands.

I agree. I know what you are getting at. Many people post comments such as "Apple would never do that, because they never did so in the past". I think those comments are a little silly, especially when it comes to products.
ie. Apple would never build a phone with buttons.
That doesn't have anything to do with corporate culture and that's sort of what I was getting at. |

Yep,
Your right Bandit.
Hey Tony...
Microsoft Word is expensive because the book that comes with it, weights 30 lbs. So it is all to do with shipping cost per lb.
Re Bing.
What a crap search engine.
I compared it to Google's search function by typing in 4 words.
Apple
Google
Microsoft
Yahoo
(G) stands for Google search engine (B) stands for Bings' search engine.
Here are the results.
(G) Typing the word 'Apple' delivered 354,000,000
(B) Typing the word 'Apple' delivered 135,000,000
....
(G) Typing the word 'Google' delivered 2,150,000,000
(B) Typing the word 'Google' delivered 181,000,000
....
(G) Typing the word 'Microsoft' delivered 515,000,000
(B) Typing the word 'Microsoft' delivered 225,000,000
....
(G) Typing the word 'Yahoo' delivered 2,330,000,000
(B) Typing the word 'Yahoo' delivered 279,000,000
....
I think the underwhelming results speak for themselves.

Hmmm.
Maybe I spoke too soon.
Now it looks like Google's rep on the Apple board is leaving.
I hope I am wrong, but this bodes ill for Apple.

| I don't know, but Microsoft and Yahoo are starting look like angels in comparison. They have also become the new underdogs. Some are even saying that Apple, Google and AT&T are the new evil empire. I wouldn't say that, but some of their recent behavior is hard to swallow. |

Hehehe.
A friend of mine is a devout Card carrying member of the Socialists Interntionale, and he absouletely dispises everything about Microsoft.
He rants and raves about what he calls the "American Capitalist System"
Yet for all of that, he loves Apple.
Which goes to show...
Something is really bent with his political radio receiver.

Sounds like someone I would avoid at a party. Not because of his beliefs, but because he sounds weird.
"Oh yeh, really... you don't say." victim slowly shy's away.

I never really despised Microsoft. I just thought Apple made a superior operating system and software. I would like to find out more about this Socialists Interntionale though. Do they provide universal healthcare? |
