Western Digital today announced the release of their WD Scorpio Blue 750GB and 1TB 2.5-inch SATA hard drives. According to the company, both models come in the 12.5mm form factor and use 333 GB-per-platter technology to achieve the higher capacities. They also deliver high-performance with a 3 gigabits per second (Gb/s) transfer rate and feature Western Digital technologies like WhisperDrive, ShockGuard and SecurePark to enable quiet and safe operation. The WD Scorpio Blue 750GB and 1TB hard drives are priced at $189.99 and $249.99, respectively.

Wow! I wasn't expecting the 1TB drives to come out so soon. I thought it was going to be topped at 750GB until the end of the year. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| Will 12.5mm drives fit inside the 2009 Mac mini? If so, I'm so getting one. |

9.5mm drives are compatible. Not the 12.5mm, no love for mini owners on this round. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

Really? I'm thinking it might be a go. There is a nice little chuck of space between the hard drive and SuperDrive. All you really need to do is dump those mesh pads. Assuming the mounts are all in the same location. Was that space not there in earlier Mac minis? |

Hate to say it but you may have to take the role of a guinea pig and let us know the results. 1TB in Mac mini or a MacBook Pro well I thought about SSD 1TB 2.5" but the 512MB SSD is 12.5mm in height as well. _________________ 24" LED Cinema Display,Mac Mini '09, 2.0GHz,

Can you spot me some money for testing?
Honestly, there is a nice little chuck of space between the top of the hard drive and bottom of SuperDrive. I just had mine apart looking. I could be wrong, but I think it will fit with a little room left. My only concern would be with heat and what purpose those shielding pads play. They would need to be removed.
Edit: I also forgot about the mounts. Does anyone know if they are the same? |

This is really great news. I thought the same, of 2.5 HDD's being capped at 750GB's. I thought all the effort would start going in SSD's instead.
...now I wonder what the future awaits, anyone think a 2.5 WD Black 1TB, that won't start a fire, is on the way? |

12.5mm = cheating.
I just put a 500GB WD in mine, but I do remember a little space being between the two drives. I'm not sure there is adequate space though. Then again, the bottom of the SuperDrive could become a heatsink of sorts if they just meet up. |

Hopefully this means lower prices on the 500GB drives. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

Thanks for rubbing it in.
Just kidding. I honestly don't see them falling much lower. Most of the OEMS are already at $89 on Newegg. |

I'm in no big hurry to upgrade myself, but you could always take the SuperDrive out. |

There is a bit of space, if you measure the opening, it comes close to 12.5mm total, but the extra space is needed for cooling. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

When I see 1TB in a Scorpio Black [7200 RPM] then I'll be interested...
When I see 1TB in a 10,000 RPM 2.5 SATA I'll be excited....
When I see 1TB in a 15,000 RPM 2.5 SATA I'll know I'm hallucinating lol. |
