App Store Downloads Top 1.5 Billion in First Year
Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Apple today announced that customers have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications in just one year from its App Store. They also said the App Store continues to grow at an incredible pace with more than 65,000 apps available to consumers in 77 countries and more than 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.
"The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," said Steve Jobs in a statement. "With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up."

I can't see anyone catching them either. This is just like the momentum they had with the iPod. Everything that comes out will be dubbed an iPhone or App Store killer, but nothing actually ends up being a killer. I could be wrong, but it seems like game over for the rest of the industry. The best they can hope for is scraps. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| Android is probably the biggest threat, but I can't see anyone catching up to the iPhone and App Store juggernaut in popularity. |

Even competing phones/plans are starting to compare themselves to the iPhone in TV ads. I just saw one the other day saying "X#$'s cheaper than a 2 year iPhone plan".
I never really doubted that the iPhone would be a success. I am rather surprised at how quickly it is gaining market share.
The Mac has been arguably better than PC's for years and although gaining market share it seems to be slowing chipping away, whereas the iPhone is like a tidal wave.
It's quite amazing that the app store is growing so fast. If only developers were as enthusiast about OSX. That being said a lot of the popular iPhone apps are "craplets". OSX really doesn't need... I want to say "junk" but to be fair if it entertains you, then so be it. |
