VLC 1.0 Released
Tuesday, July 7, 2009
Posted by: Glenn
The VideoLAN team today announced the release of VLC 1.0, a major update to their popular cross-platform media player. According to the developers, this version of the software introduces many new features, formats and codecs to the VLC multimedia framework and fixes a number of bugs that were present in the 0.9.x or 0.8.6 versions. You can check out the complete changelog over here if you're interested. It truly is an impressive release. VLC 1.0 weighs in at 19MB and requires a Quartz Extreme capable Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

| VLC 1.0 rocks! I can't figure out how to get it working with AirTunes though. |

It's still my favorite standalone media player. At least until QuickTime X comes out with Snow Leopard. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Sad most VLC user's used vlc because of the fact they could use it on there g4 g5 and intel macintosh computers.
Now by going intel only this will hurt VLC greatly on macintosh. |

Agreed.
It is nowhere near as snappy as it used to be. If you select a new position in your video it takes a second to que up. You'd think it would be quicker since they dropped PPC support. |

Very odd... I have a G5 and I just downloaded version 1.0.0 (aka Goldeneye.. ) It is working fine - what about those Intel only comments? _________________ Desktop | PowerMac G5 - Dual 2.7Ghz 2GB

| It got worse for me, but I guess I can't complain too much. Watching WMV's with Microsoft's VC1 codec would play a little choppy, and with no sound. Now it just crashes. Oh well. |

You are correct. The true requirement is a Quartz Extreme capable Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or later. Therefore, I corrected the last sentence from Glenn's article. _________________ Brian

I use VLC in Leopard, Ubuntu and Windows 7 RC. It's pretty much my favorite media player. I do agree with Bandit though. It doesn't feel quite as snappy or responsive as previous versions. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| I'll be glad when the VLC support site returns or someone posts information about using AirTunes. If anyone has a clue, please share. |

|
|
I'm pretty excited to learn about VLC's new support for MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing) audio. For the uninitiated, MLP is the codec used for most DVD-Audio discs, which supports high definition surround audio. I've got lots of DVD-As that I'd love to consolidate to my Macmini HTPC, but until now Macs have not supported MLP playback in any form.
Now my bottle neck is the S/DIF connection, it can't support full 24bit/96kHz 5.1 output, which has me looking for a external sound card solution. I expect the soundcard would need to be USB or FW to six analog outputs (or possibly HDMI output, however my amp doesn't support direct HDMI imput).
Any suggestions? _________________ Macmini Core 2 Duo 1.83 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, Leopard OS v. 10.5.5 w/ Samsung 32" LCD display, BT KB and Mouse |

No problem! It works fine, but I noticed a weird humming noise coming out of my G5 (not speakers) when I look at "About VLC media player..." Might be a little bug. _________________ Desktop | PowerMac G5 - Dual 2.7Ghz 2GB
