Hulu Intros Hulu Desktop for Mac and Windows
Thursday, May 28, 2009
Posted by: Glenn

Hulu today announced the release of their Hulu Desktop application for Mac and Windows. According to the company, "Hulu Desktop is a lean-back viewing experience for your personal computer. It features a sleek new look that's optimized for use with standard Windows Media Center remote controls or Apple remote controls, allowing you to navigate Hulu's entire library with just six buttons. For users without remotes, the application is keyboard and mouse-enabled. Hulu Desktop is a downloadable application and will work on PCs and Macs. It will initially launch as a beta product during which we plan to gather and incorporate user feedback to improve the service."

The Hulu Desktop for Mac weighs in at 2.12MB and requires a 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo or comparable processor, 2GB of RAM, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later, and Adobe Flash 9.0.124. You also need at least a 2Mbps Internet connection for streaming.

I can't wait to get home and give it a try. It looks and sounds pretty cool.

Wow, I think Hulu needs to build and entire media center application. That is a really nice looking beta. I wouldn't mind having it on my Apple TV either.

I think you can pretty much ignore the call for a 2.0GHz processor. It's running like a champ on my 1.66GHz CD Mac mini with 2GB of RAM. Man, I'm really impressed with the UI and navigation. They did a nice job!

Keeps crashing. I'll stick with Plex.

I like Plex, but this is killer for Hulu. It also seems pretty stable. I mean, it hasn't crashed on me yet (knock on wood). Did you install that plugin? If not, maybe that has something to do with it crashing.

Yeah, it's a nice looking application. I wish you could shut it down with the Apple remote though. Am I missing that option?

Yes and now it won't even load. It's junk.

Junk? This is so much nicer than Plex or Boxee for watching Hulu vids. I know those apps do other stuff, but they don't do this as nice. And it's not like Plex never crashes.

It keeps crashing for me too. Maybe you need to uninstall Boxee for it to work. Laughing

It's not better if it doesn't work.

I agree, but it hasn't crashed on me once. So it's hard for me to call it junk at this point. Then again, Plex has crashed on me dozens of times. I would start calling it junk, but I like it too much. Laughing

Just the opposite for me. Plex hasn't crashed once.

I've only been messing around for the last 15 minutes, but it seems fairly stable to. I was able to login, browse my queue and everything. It also feels really snappy with the remote. Now, I can't wait to see what these guys do for the iPhone. They said it was going to be killer a few months ago. I don't doubt them after seeing this in action.
