App Store Reaches One Billion Downloads
Thursday, April 23, 2009
Posted by: Glenn

Apple today announced that the App Store has reached one billion downloads. According to the company, the winner of the "One Billion App Countdown Promotion" will be announced soon. By the way, it only took Apple nine months to reach this milestone. I don't know about you, but I think that's pretty darn impressive.

[Update:] The one billionth app, Bump created by Bump Technologies, was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston, CT. As the grand prize winner of Apples one billion app countdown contest, Connor will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro.

I'd be impressed if it were simply music downloads, but apps... this is truly amazing.

It reallty goes to show the power and future potential that Apple holds with the iPod t\ouch and the iPhone. I personally don't have either yet. It's the apps that are going to be the reason people move to these devices.

You should be surprised. The projected best case scenario estimates for the entire of year of 2009 was 1.2 billion. Apple is only 9 months into the launch and not even 4 months into the 2009 year. Within the first 365 days of the launch, Apple should hit 1.33+ billion (that's not factoring exponential growth).

I know I come off like a jerk quoting this stuff. That's not my goal. I simply wanted to point out that the app store is doing much better than anticipated.

Me too! I could have been a contender. I could have been somebody.

Actually, it seems like I've downloaded a billion apps this month. I just need a better way to organize them all. That home screen and multi-page thing isn't working that well for me anymore. I know we're getting search with 3.0, but I wouldn't mind having like folders or Stacks in the Dock.

Yeah, but I don't have that many apps and I have a new "update" almost every damn day.

I wonder how many of the "billion" are the same app, just updated once a week for the past however long 2.0 has been out, on a pile of phones?

PS: I don't buy apps, if it isn't free, no thanks. I don't "live" on my phone, I have some handy apps and thats about all I need. And in the almost 2 years I've had my iPhone and iTunes I've downloaded less than 50 songs...

I surely didn't win anything. I only have like four or five paid apps. The rest are freebies.

Yeah, I might have updated AOL Radio, AIM, Rowmote, Facebook, Zippo and Pandora 500,000 times. At least that's what it seems like.

Ah Devo,

What sweet melancholy...

For the most part & in some way or other....we're all...

" Could have been Champions..."

That's because we're mostly NOT the X generation who do most of the downloading..

That being the case, I will console myself with other older generations worth of "Could have been Champions"

" I could have been somebody instead of a Bum...which I am"

Man...They don't write lines like that anymore...Razz

On the Waterfront is one of the best movies ever. I watch it every time it's on TV. That scene and the one at the end where he walks up all beaten to work gets me everytime.

Yeah, I'm glad a kid won this contest. I would rather see some youngster win than a 45-year-old yuppie living on the Upper West Side.
