This drive has always sounded like a winner. It's just that fan in the back that worries me. Can anyone convince me to put one on the short list? I'm still looking around for a new external with Firewire 800. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I'm still playing the field, but that's the drive I'm leaning towards. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

You could slap in two Seagate 1.5Tb's @$119 ea. (newegg) and buy the bare bones enclosure for $145. $383ish total.
The Specs of this enclosure are appealing.
AND they say CarbonCopy Cloner is included if you buy a pre-configured unit.

| The price on this is still a bit high, but not as bad as G-Technology. Anyone know why G-Tech RAID enclosures/drives are so pricey, are they worth it? |

| I think that I would rather have a hardware based RAID over two of the Seagate Freeagent drives. I would go the route TonyMontana described though. |

I think you are just paying a premium for the brand, design and quality aluminum enclosures. G-Tech also targets their products towards Mac users. Can you say Apple Tax? |

Not to rehash this bit again, but if you just need a drive to be backed up every night, or once a week for that matter, I've been really happy with the media server that I built, detailed HERE. $400 with 2TB, but could be 3TB for a few $ more. Plus, you can use it to download torrents or what have you.
I thought I needed RAID at first too, but really, RAID only seems necessary if you work with a lot of sensitive data that needs every bit backed up. Backing up movies and music, the worst that would happen is I'd lose a couple of them. I just have SuperDuper! do automatic backups weekly. It pretty dang quiet, and energy efficient too.
I know, I know, Hackintosh blah blah blah...
I'm just really happy with it all, so I like to blab about it.

229.00 for 2tb
or 149.99 for a barebones kit.
How about neither.
When i can get a 2tb drive for 100.00 and a cage for 25.00 why would i want to spend 229.00 kinda overpriced if you ask me. |

Nice little computer, I like the logo on it
...speaking of having computers back-up stuff, I'm happy with my custom built Windows Home Server, mines worked fine. My friend also has a WHS, and his PSU stopped working, which ruined one of the 1.5TB HDD, the WHS proved to do its job, and no data was lost.
I also like the fact it can be used as a PC, since the WHS software is really Windows Server Small Business Edition.
At times I do wish I would have gotten the HP WHS though, since it actually supports Time Machine now. |

Dude, you're smokin' crack!
Where are you going to get a 2TB drive for $100?
I'd like to buy a couple at that price... |

It looks like they have the old enclosures on sale for $97. It doesn't have eSATA, but we can't use that anyways. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)
