I found a pretty good price for a used Mini at L.A. Computer Co. My Mother picked one up about 4 months ago and has been very pleased with her purchase. She got the 1.83 at the time I think it was $379 or so. I'm considering the 1.66 for a HTPC. It's only $299! Also has a 30 day warranty just in case.
Usual disclaimer I'm not affiliated with L.A. Computer but my mom is a satisfied customer. _________________ Mac Mini 2,1 & Mac Mini 4,1 |

the 1.66 is not fast enough for a HTPC. I owned one. The 1.83 is good enough. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Does it stutter?
It won't play dvds effectively?
Not quite enough processing power?
I guess I'm asking why the 1.66 won't or couldn't be a HTPC?

if you rip dvds it takes forever to encode. if you record tv it won't play hdtv very well. the 183 with 4gb ram will record hdtv 1080i with an elgato and play it flawlessly. the 183 will let you watch hdtv 1080i with out stutter. the 166 does have trouble letting you watch tv. if you want to play 480p dvds only and itunes. the 166 will do the trick. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Thanks for the input. I have 4gig in my 07 mini and it works very well. My thought about the 1.66 is that it has to be more powerful than an AppleTV? But I'm not sure about that. Plus it has a built in dvd player, but I'm just making some assumptions.
The 183 is only $50 more and ram is cheap. _________________ Mac Mini 2,1 & Mac Mini 4,1 |
