I opened itunes and hit command E to open the bay door before itunes finished. It stalled. I killed the process using activity monitor. There were 2 processes, so I did them both.
I customized the toolbar with an 'eject' button. The button does not light up, it's more of a shadow. It does nothing when clicked.
I also tried rebooting while holding command/option E, also the Left mouse button. Nothing works.
It worked fine yesterday, so I'm thinking something isn't loading. I think it's a driver problem. Can I reinstall the driver, or have the sys disc repair something?

It sounds like it doesn't even know there is a disc in the drive, however it should have done a force eject when you booted holding the mouse button.
I'm not familiar with the big old G5s, but are you able to get a pin into the eject button area?
