Woot! I finally broke down and bought a MSI Wind U100. After opening the box and removing the bottom case, I stuffed in an extra 1GB of RAM before ever even powering it on!

So, then I booted into BIOS and selected it to boot from my USB optical drive, out went XP Home and in went XP Pro SP3 on a newly created partition of about 70GB. After all the Windblows hub bub, I proceeded to boot from my 1GB SD card which just happened to have Ubuntu 8.10 installed on it. Wink After all the Linux menus and a successful install I finally got to boot up the Wind for the first time... phew!

I gotta say, XP runs very well for my work purposes and Ubuntu has been pretty good as well. (I did swap the Realtek wireless card for an Intel Pro/3945 card which has better compatibility and range)

I love the Wind! I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a Linux box or needs to dual boot XP and Linux. (I know OS X can be installed as well but, I'm not ready to make that hurdle)

Way to go, hackers! You might want to consider adding the Netbook Remix files to your Ubuntu installation. This makes a change to the interface and windowing system that I find improves the netbook experience. You can read about it and see what it looks like here.

Hackers,

I don't normally admit to such lowly & sinful emotions as ENVY, JEALOUSY & COVETNESS, but in this case, I am willing to make an exception... Mad

I just trust the Good Lord will understand why...Razz

Aqua..... Cool Surprised Very Happy

Fox that Remix sure looks interesting.

That said...( just an alternative )...

Hackers you might also have a look at >>> Moblin <<<

Cheers

you know, i've been less than impressed with any of the NBR's out there. I had originally tried Eeebuntu NBR on my EeePC701SD and almost immediately installed the standard desktop version after only a few minutes messing with the NBR. I have Ubuntu 8.10 set up and running like a champ for now on the Wind and Eeebuntu on the Eee. Both of which are also running Compiz beautifully. (Which actually looks a bit silly on a Netbook but, then again I've been known to do silly things! Laughing Wink )

Moblin looks promising but, I'll wait until it's out of Beta.

Hackers,

Installing OS X on the Wind is not such a big hurdle...

Let me know if you want some tips on the best process, as I've done it a few times. You might want to wait until the new Chameleon Bootloader comes out, if you're wanting to set up a triple boot. This is how I originally had mine, but the reality was that I didn't really use anything but OS X on it, so I changed it to a single boot-132 install.

I wanted a Wind but I'll settle for the AAO.

http://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/MSI

This will be the best OS for linux you can have. May take a little more tweaking but once you set it up, look out!

Well, I just can't leave well enough alone. I have a blue tooth module and a synaptics touch pad on their way! This will be one mean Wind when I'm done with it.... Now if only Seagate would release their 500Gb 7200 RPM drive, I'd be set! Laughing

I may have forgotten to mention that I also overclocked the CPU by 24%! It's now running at 1.98Ghz! What a difference!

When is that going to start shipping? It's been showing "auto-notify" on Newegg for a long time.
