| I don't know who would want a 17" display these days (maybe schools), but that's interesting. |

I could be wrong, but Apple has continued selling a 17" white iMac with a matte screen since they moved to the aluminum-based models two years ago. This model is only made available to schools and universities. I don't even think a individual student can buy one. That might be the model they are talking about. _________________ 2.4GHz MacBook Pro/4GB/320GB HD

That's quite possible. |

Whatever the case, don't let my wife know. She's been talking about how nice it would be to have a smaller and sexier iMac in the kitchen. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

She can't get any smaller or sexier in my eyes. It's like being married to the new iPod shuffle. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| I wish they would offer it to the public. I wouldn't mind getting one for my Mother down the road. I personally like a large screen mainly for movies, but for web browsing and most everything else I would rather have a smaller screen it's just easier on my eyes. Also a lot of people like space saving systems. I currently have a 20" I doubt I would ever want anything larger unless I sit back on a sofa and use it. |

Keep in mind the 17" screen on the iMac doesn't need to be your primary or only display. If it has a mini DVI or mini display port on the back, you could support an external display/tv of your choice.
This may be a great solution for people who want more power/storage than a mini offers.
Also keep in mind that bigger isn't always better in all environments.
dorm rooms, kitchens, POS kiosks, green homes etc.
I'm pretty happy with my 10" netbook. It serves my needs perfectly. |

I doubt that it will do either at that price. The new Mac mini is pretty much inline with the 20" iMac. I mean, minus the 2.66GHz C2D and faster drive. It even has an extra USB port. |

Those were the items I was thinking about + the level 2 cache.
Given the iMac uses a 3.5" drive it can be upgraded well beyond the mini's internal capabilities. I'm thinking more along the lines of the "typical" user. Not everyone wants external drives, nor do they want to upgrade the internal drive in the mini.
I'm just looking at some of the ways/reasons a 17" iMac may be appealing to some people. |

| But you're totally screwed when the hard drive in your iMac dies Bandit Bill. It's nearly impossible for the average person to upgrade or open. That along with the shinny screen was one of the reasons why I switched back to the Mac mini. Plus, the Mac mini now has firewire 800 and support for dual displays. Those were things that brought me over to the iMac. Well, that and Apple's reluctance to update the Mac mini. I thought it was toast for a while there. So given the choice between either Mac mini or an $899 iMac, I would still go with the Mac mini. You're right though, I'm sure some people will be interested. The all-in-one form factor works well in the areas you mentioned. |
