Apple adds HD movie purchases and rentals to iTunes

Apple today announced that iTunes customers can purchase and rent box office favorites including "Quantum of Solace" and "Twilight" in HD on the iTunes Store. Starting today, movie fans can purchase box office blockbusters for download in HD for $19.99 from iTunes, and films will be available as iTunes Movie Rentals in HD for $4.99 within 30 days after release. Customers can enjoy these films in HD on their Mac or PC and on their widescreen TV with Apple TV, as well as in standard definition on their iPhone or iPod with video.

Good news indeed. I'm afraid we'll never see Blu-ray on the Mac though.

I'm glad they finally brought the HD rentals over from the Apple TV. Keeping them exclusive was stupid.

I guess rentals are one thing, but I'd rather own the movie for good on Blu-ray.

Yeah, this is the real bag of hurt. I would never spend $20 on a DRM'd up download. I would rather have it on Blu-ray and old day of the week. Plus, some Blu-rays are coming with a Digital Copy and DVD version these days. It's like getting the best of all worlds at basically the same price.

Maybe if there was some sort of subscription plan. Until then, it's Netflix for me.

I prefer to buy the Blu-ray with Digital Copy. ...maybe if the HD movie cost $10-$15 i would buy it over the Blu-ray, if it were DRM free, than I'd be willing to pay $20. ...$5 for a rental isn't bad though, Blockbuster comes to about $6 w/taxes.

The thing I don't like about digital movies is that you don't have subtitles or different languages, there's also the movies with alternate endings, on iTUnes it be only one ending (of their choosing).

I don't know if Blu-ray is really picking up steam at retail, but I can't imagine these doing as well. There also appears to be a limited amount of movies available. I thought there were more titles available on the Apple TV. Am I missing something?
