This is kind of a silly question but ...
I'm planning to do the memory upgrade and was going to go w/4GB b/c...well b/c I can and it's relatively affordable. I don't think I really need that much memory b/c I mostly do standard internet and word processing.
But now I've read in another thread that increased memory will increase power consumption. I'm not super concerned about this but I want to make sure that the mini remains as inconspicuous as it is in its current state. I love the fact that it's silent and runs cool (very much unlike my PC).
I don't imagine that 4GB of ram (vs. 2GB) would change noise or temperature but I wanted to be sure.
Thanks |

Maybe with a faster hard drive, but that's not going to be an issue with adding more memory. To be honest, you might be fine with 2GB if all you're doing is browsing and word processing. I don't think having 4GB is a must for that sort of work load. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Our Macs are mostly used for surfing, skype-iing, etc., but I made sure each person has their own account (and therefore work areas, login, etc. Total of 4 actually users.). Especially so for our kid when she is surfing children's website. I dread the thought of allowing her to use the Mac in the adminstrator capacity!
To avoid having to log each other out when we take turns to use the Mac, I enabled Fast User Switching. So, here's where 4GB RAM helps - less twitching of the HDD and better system responsiveness, etc. |

Small increase in noise perhaps if you run the fan a bit faster. But for practical purposes, this is too insignificant to consider an issue. And cost is rather low for the memory. You won't hear the difference, and it may not run any louder.
Do go for 4GB and keep it dual channel. _________________ Night Sailor |

I just upgraded my 2009 mini to 4 gig ram and 7200rpm 320gig HD. There is a little heat when using big apps or games for extended periodes but nothing I have noticed any different to the previous mini. I checked my temp stats and everything seems to run under 145 degrees. If you like having lots of apps open you'll notice a big difference with 4 gigs. Games run smoother, Photoshop can handle larger files etc.
The apps will take as much ram as they can use so you'll notice an increase in overall performance having that extra bit of ram. Also having the extra HD space also helps overall performance. Worth the upgrade IMO. |
