OK so I have the new Handbrake & the Apple TV. So I decide to rip a copy of my store bought DVD, Cream - Disraeli Gears "Classic Albums". I chose Apple TV format from the Toggle Panel, since that's where I will watch it. It's done in under an hour, so I'm happy. Then I go to play it & I found there is gibberrish throughout in the form of Copy Guard, Macrovision, DRM or Whatever else you want to call it.
Question: Why can't I put a DVD that I bought & own in my iTunes ?
I'm pretty sure I use to be able to do that with the old Handbrake. Am I wrong ? _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Do I have to have VLC open ? I guess I'm not understanding what I need to do, in order for this to work. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

| The best method that I have found is to rip with MacTheRipper first and then give it to handbrake to compress. |

If it works I guess that's all that Matters. But isn't that a Long Process ? How long does it take per movie ? _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Well it all depends on your settings and the length of the movie.
MTR usually only takes 20-30 minutes to rip the movie, so I usually do a few in a row to start. Than I setup handbrake with a queue and let it encode over night. I don't mind files taking up space so I usually go for higher quality and use the 2-pass setting. Usually a couple of hours for handbrake to do its thing, but its when I am sleeping so its like no time at all. |

Seems interesting but even the thread you link to show people having issue with the VLC doing the decryption.
With the amount of time Handbrake takes isn't it better insurance to rip with MTR of RipIt first. Does handbrake show that it has an issue right away or does it take hours? |

Yes, they have problems. Thank the studios for that.
There is a thread or two here about ripping DVDs. I've been told that my solution is not welcome here, so I won't discuss it even though it works great.

Smithcraft... I'm very curious to know what method of ripping you use and who here told you your solution is not welcome here. Does it have to do with using a PC and a PC only type program...? Maybe something like AnyDVD or something similar...? |
