New Mac Mini Packaging?
Monday, March 2, 2009
Posted by: Brian
OneMoreThing.nl has posted a picture of the box for what is believed to be the next-generation Mac mini. Shown on the backside of the box is a photo of the Mac mini with ports for Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 800, Mini DVI, and Mini DisplayPort, as well as 5 USB connectors. It also shows logos for iLife '09, Nvidia graphics and 802.11n connectivity above the Mac mini. Now, we're not ready to confirm this as being real, but we've been hearing that updates may be coming sooner rather than later. Therefore, it seems possible.
[Update:] OneMoreThing.nl now states that new iMacs and Mac minis will be released tomorrow. The Mac mini will include the following:
- 5x USB
- 1x FireWire 800
- 1x mini DVI
- 1x Display port
- Nvidia chipset (like the newest MacBook)
- Starting at Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz
- 1 of 2 GB DDR3 memory (max 4 GB)
- 120 GB hard disk (max 320 GB)

| I have my doubts too. The Mac mini on this box has nine vents. The one posted in that video the other week had ten. Something just seems off. |

Have any of you guys ever received a Mac mini in shrink wrap? I don't even think the Mighty Mouse comes in shrink wrap. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

It might just be this being the fake, or the first picture/video were of a prototype and they decided that it only needed 9 vent ports instead of the 10. |

I just hope that one less vent doesn't equal a switch to an Atom processor. Like from the prototype or something. |

If that's real than it's finally good news as the Mac mini :
- would finally get a "real" GPU (the 9400M is still integrated but at least it's decent)
- we're not losing FireWire like the MacBook, in fact we're getting upgraded to FW800!
- the size is still the same, so we can keep using our Mac mini peripherals (miniStack, CinnaMount mini... etc)
edit: let's hope it's not an Atom CPU (dual core or not). _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

The new MiniStack also has Firewire 800. I wonder if they knew something? |

I have a Dell mini 9 netbook with a 1.6GHz Atom and I can tell you that it runs quite hot.
I would imagine the new Mac mini just needs less ventilation because of a better fan and/or heatsink. Maybe its because of a different internal hardware layout.
