Linux users, you've got to try this. I downloaded it from the Intel moblin site and set it to boot from my USB stick. I timed it; 16 seconds from startup to desktop. This thing is fast! The desktop is XFCE. It doesn't do much yet; no wireless and the trackpad didn't even work (I used a mouse). But the potential is incredible.

At present Moblin is just an alpha; in effect a demonstration of concept. But this is one project worth following. When completed, it will be available for any distro maker to use it as a core. While mainly aimed at netbooks, there is wording on the site that suggests it may run on other small appliances.

I just watched a video of Moblin V2 running on an Asus 901 after reading your post. Man, that does boot up fast. Shocked

The applications that come with it boot up instantly, too. But these are simple, single-purpose apps like an address book. I don't take that to mean much. I haven't tried to load bigger apps like openOffice, although I could if I connected my Wind to the ethernet in my house. I've seen enough to know I'm interested; now I'll wait for a beta to try it again.

The ultimate version will be very different than the alpha. The alpha is running XFCE, which is a lightweight, but capable X-manager. The default will ultimately be the more fully-featured Gnome, if I remember correctly. This will slow it down a bit, though one could always add XFCE and use it. I did like the desktop background and theme, and would be happy to have a fully operational version of Moblin with XFCE and its current appearance.
