It's not an American thing, per se. It's because the creator of Linux, Linus Torvalds is Finnish, and he pronounces his name as "Linnus" not "Line-us." Linux bears his name and pronunciation.

Linus explains the pronunciation of his name and Linux.

Jazz,

Linus Torvalds pronounces it "Linix" using the letter i instead of a letter 'u'.

That said, the accent on letter 'I' is short as in 'going in' and not long as in eyelash'...

Those who pronounce it "L-Eye-Nux" are entitled to say it that way if they wish...but the more universal pronunciation is the one Linus himself uses..

Linix... L 'in" iX..

No reason at all Smithy, and if I thought it would help I would lend Apple a picture of my gorgeous Thai wife to spice up the ads a bit Wink

Several members are unintentionally pointing in the right direction in their own respective ways, but not really getting close.

Maybe if we step back and take a squint at it from the perspective of someone who is more competent and qualified in those two domains that apple a re notoriously bad at:
marketing and web design....

The title of this thread shold be a clue, but I guess you'll all groan when I explain my hypothesis Sad

Aye, there's the rub I'm afraid Wedge. We need to be clear whether we are talking about his name or his OS. He clearly states that his name is Line-us (or line-ux).

"Linnix" is the Amercian pronunciation of his operating system:
Whilst he states that he doesn't care how people pronounce his name, he says "Linnix is always Linnix" but the interviewer does not allow him any further explanation. He probably concedes to "Linnix" from force of linguistic hegemony.
Having learnt everything I know about IT in the lands of Rechnern and ordinateurs, where the software is "Lee-nooks" and "Li-nuexx", respectively. my own pronunciation of all things computer is naturally flavoured by German and French,

From force of habit I will probably continue to say Lee-nooks in my Germano-RP accent , even if Americans think I come from Mars.
Most dictionaries list it in the IPA as :lɪnəks in English
Go figger Wink

ah, well, I know they keep changing the page, or maybe it's a different page depending where you log on from.

How many other Macs did you see from the hardware line up Ghosty?

I didn't see any others but the one. Now as I type, i see the iLife & iWorks ads, nothing else except four small ads below the main one. Very Happy

Getting close Ghosty - you may well be in the running for a free stay at my motel and charcoal grilled English Cumberland sausages for breakfast beside the pool, and a thom yam kung dinner finished off with a 1998 Lirac, and Bleu d'Auvergne on crispy fresh baguette.

Jazz,

I hate to raise the bar on this one...but I am reminded of William Cowpers' observation.. In relation to other un~advertised Apple hardware products..

If I may obliquely utilised his saying

"Absence of proof is not proof of absence"

By observing the following..( here you are in danger of falling into what is known as an "Empirical Fallacy" in that you could be guilty of assuming that the 'present absence of a thing is proof of its non existence.'

For para~quoting Cowper as well as showing up the potential flaw in your potentially logical fallacy.. I should be given a gong...

Not that I am blowing my own horn...God forbid...hehehe

Aqua-slueth...

Ps.

Jazzman.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you.

I will be stepping onto a Quantas as soon as my double whammy federal Law case is closed....

But given the welter of lawyers & grindingly expensive Barristers that I have employed...I pray to God your going to still be in business in 2 years..

PS...

On a side note I checked out North aka 2001.

From what I can gather.....there is virtually no way I will ever be able to hear his work...

Not that I am asking anything of you that might border on the illegal... Wink ...but do you happen to have a 'spare copy' ...hint hint that you can pass on...

In exchange, I might be able to pull a rabbit out of my musical hat for you...

Aqua-the musical chair bunny.

Ha! Unfortunately no. I just heard it once on a TV documentary about the movie about ten years ago while I was still living in France.
I remember it well because I was so impressed and couldn't understand why Kubrick dropped it. When i get some time I'll do some searching on the web.
