Some countries have tariffs that run very high on imported items.

Importing a windows laptop or importing an Apple laptop, I don't see it making too much difference.

Also the local sales tax (VAT for us) would also be the identical percentage on both items.

The windows machines still run at a huge saving.

I'm not defending the windows machines. I would much rather have bought Apple, but in the current economic climate I'm having a hard time justifying the cost difference when I'm having to watch my spending. Paying more than double for Apple just doesn't cut it, no matter how much better I personally think Mac OSX is to Vista.

IMHO the mechanism now exists for PC makers to undercut the price of Apple's desktops: the EFI-x chip (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FQlmYWczVI ).

Do you remember Psystar? Sold tons of PCs with OS X pre-installed, before Apple shut them down. Their Achilles heel was bundling OS X with the computer. If they had simply built a PC (complete with EFI-x chip), onto which a legitimate copy of OS X could be installed, then they would still be in business. It would have been up to the customer to choose which OS to install.

And I think that there lies the opportunity for Apple's prices to be legitimately challenged...

(Once HackersMovie realises this, I'm predicting that he'll take over the world... Wink Smile )

I can't remember, but is there something in the Apple license that forbids the installation of MacOS on a machine you build yourself?

I respect your opinion, but I don't agree.

It's a very vague phrase about only installing it on an Apple labeled computer. So some people get an Apple sticker and stick it on the case, therein giving it an Apple label.
