Okay, I've got it. 'Portable' doesn't mean that it runs on any hardware. It means that you carry around the applications and data that are personal to you and 'borrow' the CPU of the nearest Windows machine to work on your own files with your own apps. Jeez, that's pretty darn funky. Your work always stays local to you, and not tied to a particular machine or network. I like that!

I have about a million ranging from 128mb to about 2gb. I also have a 40GB external HD that I carry around also.

I used to have 4 them then when I got my 1GB I stopped using them and now I try to keep only 2 around (one for portable apps and one for school and backup of PSP). I have 2 80GB HDDs (one is 3.5" and the other is 2.5") that I use for my iTunes backup and all other files (my ripped movies). Hoping for good Black Friday sales on flash drive this year (how I got my 4GB for $50 last year) like a 16GB cheap.

i had a 1 gig stick for school that i used to bring things back and forth with
that got too small really fast so i bought a 60 gig pocketdrive, and even that wasn't really big enough
i never use the stick anymore, the usb connector is falling off anyways |

I use a Sprint wireless card that allowes you to place a m-SD card in it for storage. This is REALLY convenient on the Air, since it only has one USB port.

I find my USB flash drive to be invaluable. Best invention geared toward computers there ever was, in my opinion (other than the keyboard, mouse, and monitor, that is). Couldn't do without one.

2 Gb Kingston DataTraveller is the current one. The 1 Gb one before it actually caught fire and burned a hole through its case.
My very first one was a Benq 256 and cost an arm and a leg.

another, perhaps faster option to the pen type USB flash drive, is to use a Compact Flash card and leave it in the card reader. 32GB should be big enough for day to day use.
All of my desktop files are backed up using this method and then stored away in a fire proofed safe. Fire or theft could wipe out most peoples storage so it is wise to hide one storage method away. |

Just an update now I have 5 flash drives:
8GB SanDisk Cruzer micro
4GB SanDisk Cruzer micro
2GB SanDisk Cruzer micro
1GB SansDisk Cruzer mini (missing housing, but still working)
4GB Super Talent (it was given to me for Networking I since they were free with a computer order)

I use Sandisk Cruzer.
In fact I have a small collection of them.
1 x 2GB, 2 x 4GB & 1 x 8 GB.
They have all proved to be very reliable.
I am thinking of using them to boot Windows 7 from one, as well putting a bootable version of OS-X on another.
As for the portable apps situation.
Sandisk uses U3 technology.
At first, I found it annoying, but now, I thinks it's a very useful feature.

My line up consists of those pretty much now too
1x 2GB I bought as a spare for $10 back when they did cost $20
1x 4GB I bought three years ago during Black Friday
2x 8GB one I bought two years ago during Black Friday, and the other form the last after prom
I also have a 1GB Sandisk and a 4GB Super Talent that are both caseless now, but both work fine.
As far as U3, I hate it it's not always up-to-date and may not work in some security environments to the point you can't access the storage on the drive. Portable Apps has the most up-to-date and is all open source, you can access the drive without auto launching it, and it works in more security situations.

I'm rocking the SanDisk U3 as well. I had to strip the U3 part out of it about a year ago. My Vista machine at work couldn't read it at the time. I remember It was a pain in the ass to remove completely.
