iMacs and Mac minis to use NVIDIA chips?

Well, it looks like the next iMac and Mac mini models could in fact use the NVIDIA MCP79 chipset. According to reports, a member of the InsanelyMac forums was recently looking through the extension files that ship with the latest MacBooks and MacBooks Pros and discovered references to a "Macmini3,1" and "iMac9,1." The current Mac minis and iMacs carry the model numbers of "Macmini2,1" and "iMac8,1" in similar files on older Macs, so this would represent new models. A specific configuration file also contains the string "CFG_MCP79" with these new model numbers, which refers to the NVIDIA MCP79 chipset. The picture below shows the relevant lines from this file.

| It's good to see Apple coming to their senses. You can definitely sign me up for one on the desktop and maybe another to use as a media center. |

| I just might trade up Mac minis. I've always liked mine, but the upgraded video turns what is a fantastic machine into a truly great machine. I'll probably wait a couple months to see if there are any issues though. I don't think Apple's track record with new hardware has been that great lately. |

My prediction for the Mac mini goes:
- It will have slightly different case with a black top.
- 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of RAM.
- MiniDisplay port with DVI adapter.
- 160GB hard drive (250GB - 500GB as options).
- 2GB of RAM.
- SuperDrive.
- 4 USB ports, no Firewire.
- MagSafe connector for power
- Digital audio in and out.
- 802.11 b/g/n and gigabit Ethernet.
- Apple Keyboard, Mighty Mouse and Remote.
All yours for $699, take it or leave it. I'll take one after Snow Leopard comes out.

Me too. They'd have all the MacBook owners saying.... WTF? It will just have me crying a little bit. I can hang with USB, but I'd much rather have Firewire for my external drives and JVC camcorder. I don't see an eSATA surprise happening either. |

Me three. The firewire culture has gone back to its original state. When it first came out it was a rare thing and was mainly used only by those in the high end of tech users. After being like that for a couple years it became more common and was for about 7 years. Now it seems to be moving (at least in the mac market) to higher end systems like it was originally. Seen as a luxury again I guess.
Most consumers don't use firewire anyway.. |

| I see everything coming true on Rightondamark's list except for the keyboard, mouse, remote and Magsafe connector. Although, the Magsafe connector would allow the Mac mini to draw power from the new LED Cinema display. I could also see Apple coming out with a 20" LED Cinema, so that also bolsters the case for going with Magsafe. I totally agree that Firewire is probably gone from the Mac mini. They might keep firewire 800 on the iMac, but that gives them a way to separate the product lines like they did with the MacBooks. I really think that's a shame, but what are you going to do? It's probably too early to think about them using USB 3.0 on anything. An eSATA port doesn't seem likely either. |

seems like quite hack, the chipset in all Atom netbooks is 945GSE, which has no FW support, however that's not to say you couldn't do it via an open PCI-e 1x port and q good deal of soldering and wiring.

Unlike it's beginings though Apple isn't keeping it around on their systems so much, I easily see it staying on the Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, an iMac as HD video recorders use FW quite a bit and it's hard to market something as being a Pro product without what a Pro would need. If it does get killed off on the Mac mini it wouldn't be shocking, but missed since I've aquired a hate for USB.

| I just hope they keep the optical drive and don't get caught up in making it really small. The rest of the features mentioned sound good to me. |
